Whitman Duo Reigns Again: [NASSAU Edition]
Jason Molinet. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 27 Oct 1999:
So the Whitman duo wasn’t all that concerned after dropping the second set of yesterday’s Suffolk girls tennis doubles final to Longwood’s Danielle DeGiorgio and Jackie Legnon.
The sun was setting as a chilling wind whipped the courts, but Krauz and Axler didn’t doubt the outcome for a moment. They have been a dynamic duo for Whitman the last three seasons and are tournament tested.
Krauz and Axler regrouped to take the third set to win, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, and capture their second straight Suffolk doubles title. They are headed to their third state tennis championships, which begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake.
“More than ever, this means a lot to us,” said Axler, whose brother Josh won two straight state tennis titles (1998, 1999). After finishing second in the county and third in the state in 1997, Krauz and Axler, a junior, were knocked out of the state tournament in the second round a year ago after earning the top seed.
This is their final trip together, and they are determined to make it a memorable one. “This year is a biggie,” said Krauz, who hopes to play collegiately at Quinnipiac. “We have a good feeling about this trip.”
Jennifer LoRusso’s unlikely trip to the top culminated when she beat Whitman senior Allison Hammond, 6-2, 6-4, to win the singles title.
