Boys Tennis

It’s a big year for boys tennis in Suffolk County. Who will win the team title is anybody’s guess. With such a wide-open field, the focus may be more on whether Longwood’s Andrew Hart can win a third straight individual championship.

Two straight undefeated seasons capped by the Suffolk singles title has put the bull’s-eye on Hart for his senior year. Several viable contenders are out there trying to stop him from a three- peat.

There’s Matthew Rubenstein of East Hampton, who did not play last year because he was training at the Saddlebrook Tennis Academy in Tampa, Fla.; senior Alfredo Fernandez-Concha is in his fourth year at first singles for Westhampton, and was last year’s county runner- up; Brandon O’Gara from Half Hollow Hills West; Jonathan Wasserman from Half Hollow Hills East; Matt Weinberg from Smithtown; and Stephen Slaska of Northport, who transferred from Holy Trinity.

The team title isn’t as easy to decipher. Last year Huntington surprised everyone by coming from the third seed to defeat fifth- seeded Westhampton. Huntington graduated seven seniors. so a repeat would be even more surprising. The early favorites are Westhampton, East Hampton, Hills East, Hills West, Longwood and Smithtown.  April 7
