It has been a breakthrough year for Longwood’s Brian Hale. The junior golfer showed as much by taking the Longwood Fall Invitational on Oct. 17 at Swan Lake. Hale, who was three-under through the front nine, finished with a one-over-par 73 to outdistance 81 other players from 14 schools.

“I’m very proud of this kid,” said coach Stu Glass, in his 16th season. “What he’s accomplished is from his own sweat. I remember his hands were blistered from hitting so many balls.”

With the 11-match fall season concluded yesterday, Glass considers Hale among Suffolk’s top golfers, a meteoric rise from being 12th of 19 players on the Longwood team as a freshman.

Glass said Hale began his Longwood career as a hacker who shot nine holes in the mid-50s. Now, Glass expects Hale to be a major force at the conference and state tournament in May.

“Hopefully he will continue to achieve at the level he is at, among the leading players in the county,” Glass said. – Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 24 Oct 1996:
