GOLF PREVIEW / Bayport, Sayville Familiar Foes on the Links: [SUFFOLK Edition]

REPORTED BY LIAM MCHUGH. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 07 Sep 2000:

Bayport-Blue Point, which won the Suffolk boys golf county championship last spring, enters its first year of fall play, and expectations are high.

Bayport returns four of its top five golfers, including seniors Greg Dennis, Paul Krause and Drew McCormack, and junior Mike Daddio, all of whom are experienced players.

“They have the tournament experience and they know how to perform under pressure,” coach Rich Steigerwald said “They can just go out and play.”

Despite playing in a different season, Bayport will contend with a familiar foe: Sayville. The two schools competed in a spring league two years ago and actually share a practice course at West Sayville.

“All of my kids know all of their kids and they’re friends,” Steigerwald said. “It’s a natural rivalry.”

Sayville returns juniors Sean Piotrowski, David Larado and Rob Sherry, and sophomore James Seluga, and according to coach Ken Seal they all played a great deal over the summer. But is that enough to contend with Bayport-Blue Point?

“It’s a black and blue league,” Seal said. “It’s not going to be easy.”

Veterans Adam Kaminski and Mike Ciccarelli spearhead a talented Commack team that coach Chuck Fulton believes can play with anyone. Smithtown is always competitive and returns one of Suffolk’s top players in senior John Seifort.

West Islip senior twin brothers Brian and Kevin Scelfo are a talented duo that will keep the Lions in every match.
