Melissa Meserole had seven consecutive service points in the third game as Longwood defeated East Islip, 10-15, 16-14, 15-4, 15-12 in Suffolk girls volleyball yesterday.
North Babylon Downs Harborfields. Mary Raso had seven aces and Jayme Ditta added four kills to lead North Babylon over Harborfields, 15-8, 15-8, 7-15, 15-1.
White Lifts West Babylon. Courtney White had 15 assists and 15 service points to lead West Babylon over Brentwood, 15-4, 15-8, 15- 2.
Port Jefferson In Four. Caitlin Boser had 15 aces to lead Port Jefferson over Sayville, 15-7, 15-4, 3-15, 15-3.
Commack Outlasts Huntington. Leora Deutsch had 16 kills to lead Commack past Huntington, 15-6, 1-15, 15-4, 8-15, 15-11.

The girls volleyball season keeps expanding. Suffolk’s fall league jumped from six teams in 1999 to 13 in 2000, and this year the field more than doubles to 28 teams in four leagues. The attraction of autumn is obvious: Only teams that play in the fall can qualify for the state playoffs, at Hofstra on Nov. 16-17.
“This is what we’ve wanted all along, to bring the best teams to the fall,” Smithtown coach Maura Stauter said. “Now idle speculation will be decided on the court, and that’s how it should be.”
Suddenly, longtime Class A powers Smithtown and Sachem are joined at the top by Ward Melville, which crashes the party after a spring season in which the Patriots never lost a game, let alone a match. Though several starters graduated, outside hitter Kristin Norton and her .580 hitting percentage returns.
Smithtown, which finished third in the state tournament last year, has focused on the Patriots, but Ward Melville coach Charlie Fernandes said Sachem is the team they are excited to play. Sachem coach Lorri Kropp said that with the expanded field and rule changes, the matches are hard to call.
Politeness aside, Sachem appears poised at the top of the pyramid. Its starting lineup is back from a 15-3 season, including Empire State Games gold medalists Connie Alamia and Danielle Turner, and large school rookie of the year Sarah Long.
