The St. Anthony’s Invitational girls varsity A-I race ended just the way Ward Melville senior Suejin Ahn envisioned it. But it wasn’t just because she won the 2.5-mile race. Ahn seemed more pleased that five of her teammates finished in the top 13.

“Getting to the states as a team is our goal and everyone has improved so much,” said Ahn, who took first in 15:24.2.

Ahn’s teammates all ran strong races. Freshman Mary Kate Anselmini took third, eighth-grader Caroline O’Hea was seventh, Cecile Reuge finished eighth, Aly Wisekal took 12th and Wendy Zhang finished 13th.

“It’s awesome,” Ahn said of her team’s overall performance. “All of us finished among the top runners.”

Ward Melville’s depth notwithstanding, Ahn understands the competition will be fierce.

Longwood is pretty good and Northport has some good girls,” said Ahn, who also mentioned reigning AA champ Bay Shore, the team that beat Ward Melville for the title.

Longwood validated Ahn’s praise as Kristen Wotjuniak (15:48.95) and Christine Johnson took first and third, respectively, in the varsity A-II race. St. Anthony’s Erin Bayer finished second.

Longwood put its stamp on the race as Jennifer Johnson (younger sister of Christine) finished sixth and Sara Boyd and Alyssa Liggouri were eighth and 13th. Oct. 7
