Sachem at Longwood (Tomorrow, 7 p.m.): Undefeated Sachem, shooting to keep a firm hold on first place in League I, has won the last two matches with its biggest rival. Longwood‘s Matt Sganga and Sachem’s Steve Colasuonno could meet at 119 pounds in a bout between two returning All-County wrestlers.

Gregg Holmes knew what he was up against. Longwood‘s regular 160- pounder had a shoulder injury, and Holmes, a freshman who usually wrestles 145 or 152 on JV, offered to wrestle at 160 in last night’s Suffolk League I match with Sachem.
It was his first varsity match. He almost won it.
Longwood led Sachem 27-26 heading into Holmes’ 11-5 defeat to James Sykes. Longwood lost, 29-27, but no one faulted Holmes, who surprised his teammates, coaches, and opponents with a match as intense as the Sachem–Longwood rivalry.
Sykes got a takedown, and Holmes escaped. Sykes got another takedown, and Holmes escaped. When it was over, Sykes had four takedowns, Holmes five escapes.
“You’re not going to win every bout, but you try to gain a measure of respect,” coach Darren Goldstein said. “And Gregg did that. In one match, he earned all the respect we needed.”

There was no sense of urgency, no look of fear in Justin Crisci’s eyes. Two titles hung in the balance when Crisci stepped to the mat against Whitman’s Miguel Navarro for the 275-pound title bout at the Dr. Robert Fallot Suffolk County wrestling championships late Saturday night at Stony Brook University.
For Crisci, there was an opportunity to capture the 275-pound title and go to Syracuse next weekend in search of a state crown. There also was a chance to help Floyd win its first team title in 63 years.
In one corner, a large Longwood contingent joined the Whitman hopefuls as Navarro hoped to become the Wildcats’ first county champ since Demond Betts won the 126-pound title in 1990.
Across the way, the Floyd coaching staff told Crisci what was at stake. He nodded his head and went to the circle. This was no unchartered waters for Crisci. His pin of Smithtown’s Greg Casarona in the final bout of the League I tournament gave Floyd its first tournament crown with 160.5 points. The Colonials edged Smithtown by a point and a half and Longwood by six.
With the team title riding on his able shoulders, Crisci flattened Navarro at 4:41 of the match for the pin that earned him the individual crown and Floyd the team championship. Floyd edged Longwood, 114 1/2-113, in the closest title race since 1953 when Bay Shore defeated Amityville, 36-35.
“He is a pressure kind of kid,” Floyd coach Terry Phelan said of Crisci. “I thought it was fate. We told Justin after the Longwood kid lost at 215 that we had a chance to be county champs. He needed a major decision for a tie or a superior victory or pin for the team title. It was his for the taking. And he did it.”
