Shot Putter Having A Ball in the Gym: [SUFFOLK Edition]
Herrmann, Mark. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 15 Jan 1987
Maybe the shot put just wasn’t meant to be a winter event. There certainly aren’t many places to practice. Longwood‘s coaches have shown resourcefulness in getting athletes to toss the heavy metal ball inside the gym, along the sidelines during girls basketball practice.
“It’s ridiculous to go outside,” said Mike Santarpia, the school’s first-year field event coach. The gym might have to be enlarged, however, if Kim Kessell keeps improving.
Kessell, a junior at Longwood, set a Suffolk record last Wednesday with a throw of 41 feet, 6 1/4 inches at the Conference I crossover meet at SUNY-Farmingdale. It surpassed the previous mark, 40- 1/2, set by Patrice Felder of Whitman last year.
Santarpia said Kessell had been averaging only about 36 feet on each of her attempts with the 8-pound, 4-ounce sphere until she began an extensive weight-training program last October.
“High school throwers have trouble realizing that, in field events, the lower body is everything. It’s a matter of getting the leg muscles into the throw,” said Santarpia, who was a field-event specialist on the East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University track team.
Kessell’s technique is naturally effective, he said, adding that the county record will prove only the first of many landmarks in her career.
“I think she’s definitely a threat in the states,” Santarpia said. “I think she can go at least another five feet.”
