GIRLS STATE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS, Bay Shore’s McCurdy prevails: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

CHRIS ANTONACCI. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 07 Mar 2005:

Mary Liz McCurdy endured a bout with the flu for more than two weeks, long enough to impact the Bay Shore senior’s training and soften her expectations for the upcoming state Federation meet.

The Stanford recruit said she didn’t completely regain her confidence until she arrived at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome yesterday.

In the moments before McCurdy ran a tactical race to win the girls 1,000-meter event in 2 minutes, 55.07 seconds, she recalled her three previous experiences running in the Dome.

Mostly, McCurdy fueled her resolve with memories from her 1,000 state title in 2003. She placed third last year. “I was confident,” she said. “Running in the Carrier Dome with experience is a huge confidence-booster.”

Freshman Kristin Reese of Carmel (Section I) came in second with a time of 2:58.2. Riverhead’s Ellen Dougherty was third at 2:58.62.

Hempstead’s Jeavon Benjamin (600), Bellport’s Brittany Sheffey (1,500) and Longwood‘s Alexa Manning (shot put) also won individual titles.

In what was a tight 600 race from the start, Benjamin (1:35.14) barely beat out Michelle Seibert (1:35.48) of Ward Melville, Dede Richmond (1:35.76) of Suffern (I) and Mary Liz McCurdy’s sister, freshman Sarah McCurdy (1:36.03) of Bay Shore. Seibert, along the outside, and Richmond were even and within a stride along the final turn but could not overpower Benjamin.

Sheffey also finished strong to win the 1,500 in 4:41.23. She held off Amanda Hudson (4:41.23) of Bronxville (I), Kara McKenna of Suffern (I) and Rolanda Bell (4:42.95) of Sacred Heart.

Longwood‘s Alexa Manning, second behind Freeport’s Felicia Yearwood last year, won the shot put with a 44- 1/2 throw. Manning threw it 40-6 at last year’s meet.

Two reigning state champs, Shoreham-Wading River’s Lauren Biscardi (high jump) and Mount Sinai’s Kaitlyn Fitzgerald (pole vault), could not repeat.
