Buddy Gengler’s groundout to second base in the bottom of the seventh brought in Chris Bisig from third to tie the score at 5. Wildcats reliever Adam McLarin entered in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and nobody out and induced a 1-2-3 double play and a groundout to keep Shoreham one run behind and earned the win. Shoreham starter Doug Stasio allowed two hits and one walk in six innings. All of Longwood‘s runs were unearned on five Wildcat errors. The final is today at 3:30 p.m. against North Babylon. In the consolation game, Bellport stole seven bases, including three that sparked a three-run first inning, in its 6-2 win over Longwood. Steve Hassan started the first inning by reaching on an error and stealing second and then scored on Kevin Innes’ RBI groundout. Josh Bonventre added a run-scoring double to make it 3-0. Teammate Brian Esposito went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Innes allowed one hit through four innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. R.S. Kaiser took the loss. March 27

Junior David Rein couldn’t have pictured a better performance to gain his first varsity victory.

The Sachem junior was flawless yesterday, pitching the first perfect game of the season, and the first in Sachem history, to lead the Flaming Arrows to a 12-0 win over Longwood in a League I baseball opener. The game was called after six innings because of darkness.

Rein struck out nine, induced eight groundouts and one flyout. His no-hitter was the sixth in Sachem history and the first since 1987, when Eric Reichenabch threw two and Bob Kohn pitched one.

Rick Asner went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Jason Romano added two hits and two RBI. Jason Otto took the loss.

Len Lupo took a perfect game into the seventh inning before settling for a no-hitter with eight strikeouts in Smithtown’s 2-0 win over Longwood yesterday in a League I baseball game. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 01 May 1996

Kevin Willi reached on an infield error with one out in the seventh inning and on the next pitch, Lupo induced a game-ending double-play groundball. Lupo faced the minimum 21 batters and improved his record to 4-0. Lupo got all the support he would need in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tim Downing doubled to score Matt Cutalo, who led off the inning with an infield single. Mike LaBarbera then singled to score Downing. Smithtown is 6-5. Losing pitcher Jason Otto threw a four-hitter. Longwood is 1-9.

Longwood 5, Sachem 3. Longwood scored three runs in the top of the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit. Bryan Tew scored the tying run on a one-out infield single by Travis Trusnovic. On the same play, the Sachem catcher threw the ball over the first baseman’s head allowing Chris Kaiser to score from second with the go-ahead run. B.J. Henaghan’s squeeze bunt forced in Trusnovic from third for an insurance run. In the bottom of the seventh, Longwood relief pitcher Kevin Willy struck out Jason Romano with two outs and runners on second and third to earn the save. WP – Otto. LP – Perez. April 3

Brentwood 18, Longwood 6. Mike Marotta had two singles and two RBI to key a 13-run sixth inning that erased a 4-2 deficit for Brentwood (3-0).
