Longwood Pulls Out Title: [SUFFOLK Edition]
Jim Baumbach. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 11 Feb 1999
That’s what filled the air minutes before the 4×200-meter relay – the final race of the Suffolk Large Schools boys track championships Tuesday night at SUNY-Stony Brook.
Smithtown had 63 points heading into the relay. Middle Country and Longwood both had 56. But Smithtown didn’t have a team entered in the race, so coach Gary Westerfield’s squad was forced to watch. Longwood and Middle Country, however, had arguably the two fastest teams in the race.
“So we have to finish at least second, but not behind Middle Country and we win, right?” Longwood coach Joe Reilly asked. The first-place team is awarded 10 points, second place gets eight.
“As long as Middle Country and Longwood don’t finish first or second,” Westerfield said in the midst of a crowd, “I think we win.”
It wouldn’t come to that. Longwood‘s team of DaQuan Hardy, Slamon Sarwari, Greg Carter and Casey Wall finished first (1:35.0). The Lions received 10 points, good enough for first place (66). Middle Country finished second in the race (1:37.0) and in the meet (64). Smithtown took third (63).
The Lions’ 4×200 team, which ran a near-perfect race, received a pep talk from their coach right before the start. “I made sure they knew that it was on the line,” Reilly said. “They responded with a great run.”
Although Reilly may have expressed confidence in his runners before the race, he admitted he was a wreck during it. “My heart was in my throat,” he said.
Smithtown’s Tim Kelly turned in the meet’s most impressive feat. The senior didn’t have time to celebrate his victory in the 3,200 (9:44.3). Instead, he had to immediately jog over to the starting line and await the 1,000, which was scheduled to start after the 55 semifinals, which was next.
But a bit of irony resulted in some extra time of rest for Kelly. In order for the 55 to take place, a utility door is opened to allow the runners more space to stop after they cross the finish line. Only a car was parked directly behind the door, making it impossible for the race to start.
“About five or six people went up to me asking me to move my car,” Kelly said. “I didn’t know what they were talking about.”
After waiting 20 minutes, seven men decided to push the car about 15 feet down the driveway to accommodate the competitors in the 55.
Kelly took advantage of the additional time. He looked fresh in the 1,000, which he won (2:35.3). Then, in the 1,600, Kelly delighted the crowd by coming back from 20 yards in the second-to-last lap to beat Commack’s Tom Martin and finish first (4:26.8), completing the sweep. “I didn’t want to run all three,” he said. “But I told my coach I would do it. I certainly didn’t have intentions of winning all three.”
In the Small Schools championships, which took place on Monday night, Half Hollow Hills West used three first-place finishes to beat second-place Port Jefferson, 77-65.
Patrick Bonawandt, Roger Williams, David Goldberg and Paul Connelly won the 4×400 relay in 3:39.5. Jacob Berman, Gavin Goldstein, Travis Baldwin and Geoff Goldstein won the 4×800 in 8:41.2. And Eric Duboys finished first in the triple jump (40-7 1/4).

Bay Shore’s Moore Is No `Fluke’: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Jim Baumbach. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 16 Feb 1999:
Tim Moore spent the entire indoor season in search of a solution. Soreness in the Bay Shore senior’s left hamstring constantly hindered his starts in the 55 meters.
Moore tried everything from various stretches to different kinds of starting positions. All with the same results. Then, days before last week’s Large School Championships, coach Noel Certain had an idea.
“I knew he had some distance in him from running cross country,” Certain said. “So I told him he should run the 600.”
Much to his own surprise, Moore, who said he was more nervous than usual, won the race in 1:25.3. Then the real challenge surfaced. Unsure of whether his win was a “fluke,” Moore said it was important to him to give the same performance in the boys state qualifier Sunday at SUNY-Stony Brook.
With 50 meters left, Moore outkicked the rest of the competitors and finished first (1:25.7), qualifying for the state championships Feb. 27 at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome, for the second straight season. In the individual events, all firstand second-place finishers advance, and third-place finishers needed to beat qualifying times. The top relay teams also advance.
“I was kind of scared,” Moore said of competing in the 600. “At first, I didn’t want to embarrass myself. But by the last lap, I knew I could win it again.”
Certain, though, always expressed confidence in Moore’s ability to succeed in middle distance. “He may not admit it, but he did run a half-mile for me in a dual meet last spring,” he said. “Besides, it gets him ready for the 4 x 400.”
The Marauders’ 4 x 400 team, which consisted of Sam Mickle, Chris Kahl, Keldon Walker and Moore, finished first in 3:32. After Moore, running the anchor leg, crossed the finish line, he bent down and kissed the track good-bye.
“This is my last race on this track,” he said. “This is a great way to finish.”
For Bellport senior Craig Bazarewski, this season has been injury-free and he couldn’t be any happier. Appendicitis sidelined him in his sophomore season. Last season, Bazarewski was able to return from a pulled right hamstring, which he hurt while weightlifting, to qualify for states in the triple jump.
“I couldn’t run a race, but the doctors said I could jump, so that worked out,” said Bazarewski, who still undergoes therapy for his hamstring.
Sunday worked out even better for Bazarewski. He qualified for states with a win in the 1,000 (2:37.5).
“Everyone keeps joking when I go to therapy,” he said. “They keep saying, `Here we go again.’ “
The crowd devoted much of its attention to the running events, leaving Longwood senior Brett Wachter to shot put with few watching – just the way he likes it. He threw 49-6 1/2, followed by teammate Deron King (46-9 1/2).
“It’s much better this way because it’s easy to go into my own world and just throw it,” said Wachter, who sprained some ligaments in his throwing hand a week before states last year. “It’s a lot easier when you’re not in the spotlight.”
Smithtown senior Tim Kelly successfully followed his three-win performance in the Large School Championships by qualifying for states with wins in the 1,600 (4:27.3) and the 3,200 (9:36.7).
