TRACK PREVIEW
Boys Track
Longwood is loaded for the spring season, and coach Joe Reilly is confident his team will win the Class A county title for the fifth time in 11 years. Now in his 19th year at Longwood, Reilly would be hard-pressed to remember a better team returning.
The 4×200 relay team of Da’Quan Hardy, Slamon Sarwari, Casey Wall and Chris Curate won the state indoor public schools title and are all back for the spring. Wall, who took first in the 300 meters in the winter, has given up lacrosse to concentrate on track this spring.
The catalyst for this year’s team is Sarwari, who Reilly said can run nearly any event.
“Slamon is our backbone,” Reilly said. “He’s pretty special, he loves the sport and brings a good presence with him that the other kids pick up.” Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 29 Mar 2000

Longwood Right At Home Winning: [SUFFOLK Edition]
Liam McHugh. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 26 May 2000:
It couldn’t have worked out better for Longwood seniors Casey Wall and Chris Curate if they had planned it. Wall and Curate, running their final meet on their home track, each won two individual events and combined with Da’Quan Hardy and Slamon Sarwari to win the 4 x 100- meter relay (43.15 seconds) in leading Longwood to its second consecutive Suffolk Class A Track and Field championship yesterday.
Wall blazed to the 200 title in 22.25, and won the 400 in 49.59 before breaking open the 4 x 100 with a blazing second leg. And while Wall was taking care of business on the track, Curate was making his presence felt off it. Curate won the triple jump (44 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and the long jump (21-5 1/2) and took third in the 100 (11.3) before anchoring the fastest 4 x 100 relay at the championships, regardless of class.
“It was special because it was at home, and a lot of people came out to watch,” Wall said. “We did not want to lose at home.”
The Lions made sure that at the end of the meet, the hometown contingent was not left in doubt concering the outcome. Longwood took first with 161 points, while Centereach took second with 100.
“We didn’t have anyone who let us down in any area,” Longwood coach Joe Reilly said.
Reilly’s words ring especially true when considering the field events. Aside from Curate, Marc Kellman was third in the long jump (20-7 3/4) and fourth in the triple jump (43-3 1/4), Gary Johnson won the discus (135-9) and Tom Corso (11-6), James Bresnahan (11-0), Kevin Hale (11-0), and Tony Williams (10-6) took second through fourth, respectively, in the pole vault.
“The seniors wanted to have the county meet at home to go out in style, and we went out in style,” Reilly said.

For Sarwari, End Is Fitting: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Jason Molinet. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 June 2000:
Slamon Sarwari squeezed bubble gum between his index and forefingers as he recounted his realization once more. As he stepped on the oval at Mt. Sinai for yesterday’s Suffolk track and field individual championships and state qualifier, the Longwod senior remembered this was where his six-year odyssey all started.
Sarwari’s high school career began as a seventh-grader on the Longwood varsity with a dual meet at Mt. Sinai. Yesterday was his final opportunity to run before the local crowd as a Lion. He placed fourth in the 200 meters, and was a key component to two winning relay teams. The top finishers in each class qualify for the state meet, which begins Friday at Liverpool High School (Section III).
Sarwari, Da’Quan Hardy, Casey Wall and Chris Curate won the 4×100 relay in 42.68 seconds, which was redemption for last season’s debacle.
The squad didn’t even qualify a year ago because of a bad exchange.
Luck has been with the Lions of late, however. Longwood’s 4×200 relay squad won the state public schools indoor title in March. Sarwari, Wall, Curate and Marley Watkins also took the 4×400 relay in 3:23.97 yesterday, giving Longwood a pair of contenders for titles Friday.
“I want to go up there and do my best,” said Sarwari, who will run at C.W. Post. “We won the indoor championship, so we know we can do it.”

FEDERATION TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Where: Liverpool High School, Syracuse. When: Noon today; 9 a.m. tomorrow. Top local runners: Girls-Shevon Stoddard (Uniondale), Jatoya Moore (Uniondale), Chelsea Hammond (Elmont), Kaitlyn Ryan (Garden City), Fara Kitton (Bellmore JFK), Danielle Jelley (Clarke), Jenn Donovan (Half Hollow Hills), Amy Linnen (Mt. Sinai), Katrina Svoboda (Bayport-Blue Point). Boys-Anthony Ewers (Lawrence), Xavier Moore (Hempstead), Marc Crosswell (Elmont), Charlie Millieone (St. Anthony’s), Paul Ciurlys (Whitman), John McKeenan (Port Jefferson). Outlook: Long Island’s boys should fare well in the relays this weekend. Expect Bellmore JFK (4 x 800 meter), Longwood (4 x 100), and Lawrence ( 4 x 400) all to challenge for gold. Individually, Ewers, who finished first at the indoor national meet in the 400 in March, appears to be the man to beat, while Linnen will look to try to upstage her performance last year when she won the pole vault while setting the state record at 12 feet. Moore will look to defend her 100 and 200 championships, and her teammate, Stoddard, will make a run for gold in the 400 hurdles. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. HIGH SCHOOLS / STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS / BOYS TRACK / Ewers Too Tough for 400 Foes: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Liam McHugh. STAFF CORRESPONDENT. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 11 June 2000
Liverpool – Lawrence’s Anthony Ewers ran off with the 400-meter crown yesterday at the state Federation track and field championships at Liverpool High School.
Ewers, a senior, coasted to victory (47.37 seconds) in an event that isn’t scheduled in New York state during winter track meets.
“I was a little worried because I haven’t seen what the other guys around the state were doing,” Ewers said.
The jitters must have transferred into nervous energy, because Ewers started off like a rocket. He bolted out of the blocks, which helped him build an insurmountable lead. “Getting out fast was a key for me,” Ewers said.
Jahmel Mayrant of Roosevelt finished second (47.87).
Ewers combined with Darius Adams, Damian Morgan and Leonard McKenzie to help Lawrence (3:18.56) finish second to Longwood‘s Casey Wall, Marley Watkins, Slamon Sarwari and Chris Curate (3:17.57) in the 4×400.
Two other Long Island athletes put themselves in the limelight with contrasting performances.
Brentwood’s Greg Santiago showed grace and agility in winning the 110 high hurdles (14.44) and placing third in the 400 intermediate hurdles (54.79).
Santiago nipped the third hurdle in the 110 but made the win seem effortless. “I didn’t hear anything around me,” Santiago said. “I was in a zone.”
Paul Ciurlys earned his 800 victory a different way; he went and out-fought someone for it. Ciurlys, of Whitman, found himself trailing Damion Drummond of Robeson (Brooklyn) by almost 20 meters after one lap. Ciurlys, a senior, closed the gap until he willed himself past Drummond down the stretch for the win in 1:52.46.
Bellmore JFK’s 4×800 team (Elliot Rosenblum, Justin Smith, Nick Riggio and Sean Devens) carried the 2000 indoor national champs to victory in 7:47.91. Trumaine Pendleton won the Class B triple jump with a leap of 47-. Centereach’s Dan VanHorn won the Class A pentathlon (3,323 points). The Roosevelt 4×100 relay of Tauren Ghee, Jerone Pettus, Jahmel Mayrant and James Wyche took the Class B title in 42.74. Port Jefferson (John McKeeman, Pat Sullivan, Ken Uhll and Felipe Cersosimo) took the Class C/D title in the 4×100 in 43.70 and the 4×400 (McKeeman, Sullivan, Uhll and Pat LaPointe) in 3:24.02. McKeeman also won the Class C 100 in 11.15. June 11c
