HIGH SCHOOL SPRING PREVIEW / GIRLS LACROSSE / Interlopers Crashing Party in Suffolk: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Dan Hodes. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 09 Apr 2001:
The elite of Suffolk girls lacrosse is a very exclusive club, one that admits almost no new members. Since the first tournament in 1990, only four schools (Bay Shore, Huntington, Northport and Ward Melville) have even reached the large schools final.
Smithtown has challenged the established masters in the previous two years but fallen short of the final. Now, schools such as Whitman and West Islip are joining the fray at the top, making the race for No.1 that much more interesting.
“Our goal is to go back to states,” Bay Shore coach John Pfeffer said. “But we know it will not be an easy task.”
Whitman (8-7) has gone from unseeded to No.6 seed in the past couple of years. This can be credited to a concerted effort directed at girls of all ages, the same kind of effort that turned Bay Shore and Huntington into powerhouses in the first place. “We now have a coach at every level who has the background to turn good athletes into good lacrosse players,” Whitman coach Melissa D’Angelo said. She cited middle school and PAL programs as keys to producing young stars such as attackers Kim Wathey and Kate Gilfillan. Senior defenders Sara Hazen and Elise Karwoski bring experience.
For West Islip (10-7), the problem is different, as the Lions graduated a pair of All-County stars in Danielle Lillis and Rachel Szakmary. In previous years, a team at this level would not have the depth to compete the following year. But times, they are a changing. “This group of freshmen are the best class I’ve had, because they’re so dedicated to getting better.” Midfielders Kerri Finn and Kristen Zeitler lead the charge in 2001.
Though these teams are clearly on the rise, the old guard is not giving up its spots without a fight. The defending champion is Bay Shore (18-2), and the gap has widened between the Marauders and everybody else. Even though it lost six players to Division I schools, Bay Shore returns All-American candidates in attackers Kristie Leggio and Erin Riordan. Midfielder Christina LaPenta and defender Jeanette Dunnigan also will contend for county honors.
Ward Melville (16-3) brings back the top goalie in the county, Lyndsey Feldman, and will play a speed game with burners Michelle Kraics and Brittany Carriero. Northport (10-7) does the opposite, slowing it down with the stellar defense of Kate Darmody, Brittany Gesuale and Mary Beth Wine backing up sophomore goalie Kristen Hordy.
Huntington (7-10) should rebound from an atypically down year behind the lockdown defense of Donna McCann and the scoring of Sydney Greene. Smithtown (10-6) has one of the top players in the county, midfielder Jen Maget, and needs senior goalie Jocelyn Grafstein to step into the rather large shoes vacated by All-American Jessica O’Connell.
Other teams to watch among the large schools include Sachem (7- 8), with scoring phenom Becky Thorn; Longwood (5-10), which lost six games by a single goal a year ago; and Lindenhurst (6-11), which returns the senior scoring tandem of April Yeomans and Amanda Fiore.
An even more exclusive club exists among the small schools, where every championship has been won by Harborfields (11-6). That might change this season, as Kings Park (12-3) returns All-County goalie Emily Harris.
