Different Roads To Respectability

The Amityville and Longwood football teams ended long losing streaks Saturday, 22 and 17 games, respectively, marking the first time since Nov. 1, 1981, both schools won on the same day. Both coaches, each of whom claimed the victory was indicative of recent progress, have adopted contrasting philosophies toward bringing their teams back to respectability.

Both teams face a similar problem: a losing image, resulting in fewer athletes wanting to play. Amityville, which belonged to League V last season, opted to play an independent schedule. Longwood had the same option, according to coach John Westberg, but remained in League II.

“I knew we’d take our lumps, but I thought it would be a good experience,” Westberg said. “Now it’s starting to pay off. We’re a more competitive team.”

Amityville coach Roy Voliton said, “We were getting slaughtered and not many kids were coming out for the team. Going independent was the best way to restore our program.”
