Smithtown’s girls followed suit in the varsity C race, totaling 47 points to outdistance Farmingdale (102) and Longwood (110). Jen Root (second place) was the Bulls’ top finisher in 20:37. Christina Roberto led much of the way before placing fourth in 21:18. The other scorers were Nicole Thomassen (11th), Amanda Pisano (14th) and Kathy Seifert (16th). Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 24 Oct 1999:

Longwood’s girls cross country team performed an unusual feat at the

Manhattan College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on

Saturday. With hundreds of schools along the East Coast in competition,

the Lions won the varsity E race for the second consecutive year.

Longwood scored 127 points, followed closest by Long Beach (138), Walter

Johnson (Md., 140), Guilderland (Section II, 152) and Bay Shore (156).

“It’ll be something to look forward to next year, too,” coach Rick Colon

said. “Four of our five scorers are underclassmen.”

Sophomore Stephanie Henderson led the way with a third-place finish

in 15:35 on the 2.5-mile course. She was followed by junior Jessica Lee

(10th) in 16:01, senior Christen Imperiale (29th) in 16:49, junior

Elizabeth Fosdick (39th) in 16:58 and junior Lauren Tartaglia (47th) in

17:20. Today, the Lions have a dual meet with Sachem that will settle

the League I championship. Sachem (1994-98) and Longwood (1990- 93) have

held the title every year during the decade.

Colon credited his assistant coach, Cheryl Toscano, a

physical-education instructor at the middle school, for strengthening

the program. “Our freshman team has won its race at Brown University

for the past three years,” he said. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Nov 1999:
