Bayport-Blue Point and Longwood have thrown in the towel, too – Longwood will be starting its fourth consecutive year on austerity. “When you get conditioned to doing this, and the district has been conditioned, you go along pretty well,” said Longwood Schools Superintendent Nick Muto. “With the economic climate the way it is, almost everyone has got to make some sacrifices and do what they can.” Longwood, where students are widely spread out, passed a separate transportation proposition to bus all students and has booster clubs to help support athletics.

Deer Park’s Matt Tooman posted the third-fastest time at yesterday’s state cross country championships over the 3.1-mile course at Stuart State Park in upstate Newark. Unfortunately for him, Tim Engelhardt of East Syracuse-Minoa posted the second-best time.
Tooman’s time of 16:24.8 was good for second place in the boys Class B race, as Engelhardt ran a 16:23.8. The team from Kings Park was fourth with 124 points and Bellmore JFK (186) seventh.
The fastest time belonged to Nick LaRosa of Frontier Central. He won the Class A race in 16:18.3. Longwood‘s Dan Stevenson was ninth (16:47.7) and Matt Connors of Port Washington was 11th (16:48.8). Mepham was fourth in the team scoring with 120 points and Sachem (153) was seventh.
