HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEWS / BOYS CROSS COUNTRY / Sayville Early Fron- Runner: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Brian Dalpiaz may only be a sophomore, but he runs with the confidence of a seasoned veteran.
Dalpiaz, who busted on to the Long Island running scene two years ago when he broke the New York state record for eighth-graders in the mile (a blistering 4:32.3), came back last year and proved he wasn’t just a one-hit wonder. Dalpiaz won the Suffolk Class B individual crown while leading Sayville to the team championship.
“He has it both mentally and physically. He sets goals and wants to achieve,” Sayville coach Glen Drago said. “I expect him to repeat as county champion and cut his state and federation meet finishes [11 and 16] in half.”
The Golden Flashes appear primed to make another title run. Drago’s team, which placed second in the state meet, lost only one scorer, and returns a top four that can all run a sub-10 minute two- mile.
“I feel we have a good chance of winning the counties again, and we’ll take a shot at states,” Drago said.
Class A: Floyd, which narrowly defeated Middle Country to win the A title last year and returns five of its top seven runners, including seniors Eddie Burns and J.P Lobos, has aspirations to repeat in this highly competitive class. Middle Country will be right on its heels again, along with Bay Shore, and Bellport. Longwood and Sachem are young, but could find themselves in the mix.
