Sports Notebook Brookhaven Bowlers In County Tourney: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 05 Mar 1987

Even though Port Jefferson’s girls bowling team failed to make the playoffs, its entire season did not land in the gutter. Janine Seale, a Port Jefferson junior, was the high roller in the Suffolk girls Singles and Doubles Championships last Wednesday.

At the same time, League II champion Longwood continued a successful year, as the team’s top two seniors, Lisa Marto and Tina Walczik, won the doubles title in the tournament at Brunswick Country Lanes in Coram. Longwood is getting ready for the county team tournament to be held in East Islip Saturday.

Seale was making her county tournament debut, because she had reserved most of her time for academics after she moved over from Mount Sinai Junior High last year, Port Jefferson coach George Kay said. She was hardly a bowling novice, however, having thrown marks in junior programs for years.

“She can get hot and string four or five strikes in a row,” Kay said. “But if she doesn’t, she’s pretty good at making spares.”

Seale carried a 157 average into the tournament and surpassed it in both games, rolling 204 and 175 scores. She edged Bridget Riley of Centereach by two pins for the Open Division championship. Ward Melville teammates Laurie Dugoniths and Debbie Small won the B and A Divisions, respectively, giving Brookhaven a sweep of the individual titles.

Marto (202, 269) and Walczik (172, 170) outscored their closest Open Division competitors (Bellport’s Marlena Kurass and Jacqrai Schley) by 67 pins. “Two years ago, we had done very well in this tournament, but last year, we didn’t,” Longwood coach Steve Carbone said. “The girls felt they had let themselves and me down last year, so they kept saying, `We’re going to ace them.'”

Throughout the season, Marto and Walczik “aced” opponents with support from these fellow starters: senior Rita DiSalvo, and sophomores Krista Dooley and Rachel Walczik (Tina’s sister). They will go head-to-head with League I champion Northport in the first three games Saturday.

Lauren Ohling (235 high game) and Laurie Mazliah (235-1,164 six-game series) led Northport to the Suffolk girls bowling championships at East Islip Lanes. Northport will represent Suffolk in the state championships at Mount Kisco next Saturday. Northport finished with a total pinfall of 5,123. Nicole Simon rolled a high three-game series of 550 to help East Islip finish second with a 4,763. Longwood finished third with 4,671.

High Game – Lauren Ohlig (Northport) 235, Laurie Mazliah (Northport) 235. High Three-Game Series – Nicole Simon (East Islip) 550. High Six-Game Series – Laurie Mazliah (Northport) 1,164. Team Scores – Northport 5,123, East Islip 4,763, Longwood 4,671. March 8
