Copiague’s Role Players Shine Versus Longwood: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Tom Rock. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 28 Dec 2002:
Longwood was focused on stopping Copiague’s “Big Three.” Turned out it was the “Other Two” that did in the Lions.
In the first game of the Bay Shore Classic Friday night, role players Chris Lipski and Sean Smith stepped into the spotlight to lead Copiague to a 77-66 boys basketball win. Lipski, a 6-3 junior, put back offensive rebounds and drained turn-around jumpers to the tune of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Smith, a 5-11 freshman, only hit the two most important shots of the game in the fourth quarter after not playing the entire first half and finished with seven points.
“He’s a freshman,” Copiague coach Steve Rebhotz said, “but he has proven his worth already.”
With the score tied at 57 early in the fourth quarter, Smith fearlessly put up a three-pointer from near the top of the key. The shot slipped through the net for a 60-57 lead that Copiague would never relinquish.
Moments later, Lipski attempted a three-pointer that came up short. However, Smith was there to retrieve the ball, carve some room under the basket, and slip in a layup for a 64-60 lead.
Shareefe Gilyard scored a game-high 21 for Longwood, but fouled out late in the game. Longwood did not score a basket in the final 2:36, settling only for two foul shots in an 8-2 run that closed the game.
Longwood coach Dennis Terry said his team was relying too much on jump shots that weren’t falling. “I felt like some players were trying to do too much,” he said. “When jumpshots are going well we’ll take them, but when they are not, you have to find something else.”
Or, in the case of Copiague, someone else. Like Lipski. “I thought Lipski was the key to the game,” Terry said. “We keyed up on their other kids and he took what was given to him and cashed it in.”
Longwood‘s focus was on stopping LeMichael Allen, Wayne Coward and James St. Robert, and for the most part that worked well. Allen and St. Robert each had 16 points and Coward had 10, totals that Terry said he was pleased with.
Allen, who also had 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, compared his Longwood team to a family that shares everything. “I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time,” the senior said.
Allen and Copiague (2-0) won’t have to wait long for their next game. They play St. Anthony’s (2-1) in the championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. Longwood (4-1) plays Bay Shore (0-2) at 3 p.m. in the consolation game.
St. Anthony’s 76, Bay Shore 59: John Grazioli shot 14-for-21 from the field and scored a game-high 30 points in the other first-round game of the Bay Shore Classic. Grazioli also had 14 rebounds. Doug Perotto shot 12-for-15 and scored 26 for St. Anthony’s, which outrebounded Bay Shore 35-10.

Alonzo Leads Longwood To OT Victory: [SUFFOLK Edition]
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 05 Feb 2003:
Clarence Alonzo scored 28 points yesterday, including a tip-in with 13 seconds left in overtime, during Longwood’s 77-76 boys basketball win over Floyd. Alonzo fed Steven Polk for a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime for Longwood (9-1 Suffolk League I). Polk finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Alonzo’s tip-in gave Longwood a 75-71 lead. Floyd is 5-5.
Tom Rock. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 25 Feb 2003
Clarence Alonzo quarterbacked the Longwood offense last night. In the end, he even threw a touchdown pass.
With 23 seconds left and No. 6 Longwood hanging on to a two- point lead over No. 2 Sachem in a Suffolk Class A boys basketball semifinal, Alonzo had to inbound the ball under Longwood’s basket. He launched a long overhand pass to Steven Polk, hitting him in stride for an uncontested layup. Longwood went on to a 61-55 win in front of a fiery crowd of about 700 at Sachem.
“I saw them playing up and I knew my man could jump over them to get the ball,” said Alonzo, a 6-foot junior point guard who scored 21 points and controlled the tempo of the game.
Longwood (15-6) will play top-seeded Whitman in the Class A final at 8 p.m. Thursday at Stony Brook University.
Sachem (18-3) closed to 57-53 on a putback by Trevahn Clarke with 29 seconds left and called an immediate timeout. Longwood tried unsuccessfully to inbound the ball and had to use one of its timeouts. On the second try, Alonzo was called for a five-second violation, giving the ball back to Sachem.
The Flaming Arrows then had to burn another timeout to get their game in order before Mike Mosby scored to make the score 57-55.
“The five seconds was on my mind,” Alonzo said about his decision to make the long pass. “I didn’t want another one.”
Sachem coach Dom Savino could only shake his head about the play. “I thought we had it covered,” he said with a sigh, describing the two inches that separated stealing the win from sealing the win.
After Polk’s layup, Alonzo made a steal – one of his five – as Sachem brought the ball up for a last-gasp attempt to tie. Alonzo was fouled and put the game out of reach with two free throws.
Longwood used a 20-9 second quarter to take a 26-24 halftime lead. Alonzo scored eight of his points in the period, including the last two after blocking a shot and going the length of the floor for a layup.
Longwood stayed in the locker room for the full halftime, emerging without time for any warm-ups. “We had a lot to talk about,” Longwood coach Dennis Terry said. “I would rather come out late with everything under wraps than take two or three more layups.”
Sachem made its move in the third quarter as Mike Scalia scored eight of his 13 points, including a basket from the lane that tied the score at 43 with 21 seconds left. The Flaming Arrows never led in the second half, though.
“We said it would be a game of runs,” Savino said, “and it certainly turned out to be.”
Longwood had to shuffle its lineup for most of the second half because of foul trouble. Starters Akin Rawlins, Alex Bardeguez and Israaiyl Flowers each picked up a third personal foul in the third quarter and a fourth in the fourth, but none of them fouled out.
Bardeguez and Polk each scored 10 points for Longwood. Flowers had four points but played strong defense. Mosby scored 17 points for Sachem.
With familiarity high between the two teams – they split their League I games during the regular season – the playoff meeting was bound to be a spirited contest.
Alonzo said he knew Sachem would use its 1-3-1 zone to trap him in the backcourt.
“We just tried to keep the ball in my hands as much as possible,” he said, “and let me operate from there.”

Clarence Alonzo quarterbacked the Longwood offense last night. In the end, he even threw a touchdown pass.
With 23 seconds left and No. 6 Longwood hanging on to a two- point lead over No. 2 Sachem in a Suffolk Class A boys basketball semifinal, Alonzo had to inbound the ball under Longwood‘s basket.

O’Neill Steps Up for Whitman: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

With a crowd of 1,900 at Stony Brook University looking on, O’Neill drained both foul shots. And when Clarence Alonzo‘s heave from midcourt sailed over the basket, Whitman could celebrate its 49- 46 victory by swarming the team’s unlikely hero.
“He’s a tough kid,” Whitman coach Tom Fitzpatrick said. “That’s why he starts for us.”
Whitman (20-2), making its fourth straight appearance in the championship game, took home the title for the second straight season. The Wildcats will face Suffolk Class B champion Amityville for the overall championship at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Stony Brook before moving on to the Class A Southeast Regional final/Long Island championship.
But the Wildcats nearly didn’t get past Longwood (15-7), which proved to be playoff-tough after playing in Suffolk’s competitive League I. The Lions took a 41-39 lead on a basket by senior Israaiyl Flowers with 3:41 left.
“Their guards are quick and pressure you,” said 6-7 Whitman senior Matt Ross, who finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. “Everywhere you go, they are there with you.”
Then Ross and guard Antoine Agudio intervened in a big way.
One game after scoring 35 points, Agudio had 16 points and 17 rebounds. He pulled down a defensive rebound, ran the court and hit Russell Hamilton in stride for an easy layup to tie it at 41 with 2:36 left, sparking an 8-0 spurt that gave Whitman control.
Agudio followed O’Neill’s putback and a block by Ross at the other end with a layup to make it 45-41 with 1:29 left. Ross made it 47-41 by slamming home Agudio’s miss with 1:03 to go.
But Longwood refused to go away. Team captain Akin Rawlins hit a three-pointer with 49 seconds left. Alex Bardeguez stole the inbounds pass and Alonzo (seven assists) drove to the hoop to cut it to 47-46 with 35 seconds left. Rawlins missed the front end of a one- and-one with 10 seconds to go to leave Whitman ahead by one. That’s how it remained until O’Neill finished off the Lions.
“The foul line – we’ve struggled there all year,” said Longwood coach Dennis Terry, whose team converted just 3 of 13 attempts. “If Akin didn’t hit the three, it wouldn’t have been a game anyway.”
