Smithtown (11-7) is the League I favorite, with four starters back. Senior guard Ashley Grzetic (11) is cleared from a lacrosse- season ACL tear and will play more minutes each game. Senior forward Nicole Revere is the go-to player, scoring 27 against Northport.

Longwood (16-5) returns senior shooting guard Teelah Grimes (13 ppg, 10 rpg) and 5-10 forward Vanessa Tobar (7 ppg). Guard Toni Horvath returns for Sachem (12-7), which has another Rakita – 5-11 junior forward Lauren – and 6-2 sophomore Jessica Merrihue.

Senior guard Erin Calkins (14 ppg) is back at Ward Melville (15- 4), as is leading rebounder Megan Loiacono (8).

With four starters back, Whitman (13-7) is the favorite in League II. Four-year starter Danielle Muller (14 ppg) is back on the wing, and senior Kim Wathey (10 ppg) returns at point guard. A very young Commack (9-9) had a good preseason win over Smithtown, thanks to five-year junior point guard

Kia-Less Copiague Still Gets ‘W’: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Janet Paskin. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 13 Dec 2002:

Three-time All-Long Island. A prize UConn recruit. Leader of Copiague’s best girls basketball team ever. Is there anything in the world of high school hoops Kia Wright hasn’t done?

Not anymore.

Last night, for the first time in her high school career, Wright was announced with Copiague’s non-starters. Then she sat on the bench and watched as All-Long Island senior forward Angie Clark scored 33 points in the 65-45 non-league win over Longwood.

“It was exciting, but it hurt a little inside,” Wright said. “They played good. I’m proud of them.”

Copiague (1-0) and Longwood (0-2) have played a preseason game for three years, and Copiague has won them all, starting with a seven-point win in 2000. The margin was 17 last year. Both teams went on to win their league titles and meet in the Class A playoffs – one more win for Copiague.

“It’s nice to have something like this,” Longwood Mark Gordon said. “You want to call it a rivalry, but …you have to win to have a rivalry.”

Maybe next year. Wright is a senior, as is Clark, all-county forward Jasmine Walker and starting guard Sasha Grandison. Eighth- grade point guard Erica Morrow, who grew 2 inches and gained 12 pounds to reach 5-7 1/2, 122, also returned to the starting lineup. The four proved Copiague will win its fair share before Wright’s anticipated January return.

Longwood hung in through the first quarter, which ended tied at 11. Then Copiague applied its press – another first for the Eagles this season – and held Longwood to six points and a single field goal, by Vanessa Tobar, in the second quarter.

Under their own basket, Clark and Walker totaled 14 of Copiague’s 22 second-quarter points. Each logged two putbacks, in their traditional style of saving their teammates’ mistakes.

“I was nervous,” Clark said. “But I had Jasmine on the other side. Every time I missed, she put it back.”

Walker also sank two foul shots halfway through the second quarter, ending Copiague’s 0-for-8 free-throw shooting up to that point.

With a 33-17 lead at halftime, Copiague switched from its full- court press and zone defense into man-to-man. Longwood promptly outscored Copiague 15-4 in four minutes and cut the deficit to 39- 32.

The message in the defensive shift?

“To let them know it’s not working,” Copiague coach Carole Olsen said. “They don’t believe me in practice.”

With the zone back in place through the end of the third quarter, Clark’s jitters subsided and she added six in the last three minutes. “After the third quarter, the butterflies just disappeared,” she said.

Along with any doubts about a Kia-free Copiague.
