Bayport-Blue Point and Longwood have thrown in the towel, too – Longwood will be starting its fourth consecutive year on austerity. “When you get conditioned to doing this, and the district has been conditioned, you go along pretty well,” said Longwood Schools Superintendent Nick Muto. “With the economic climate the way it is, almost everyone has got to make some sacrifices and do what they can.” Longwood, where students are widely spread out, passed a separate transportation proposition to bus all students and has booster clubs to help support athletics.
Kristen Kneisel’s layup at the start of overtime broke a 52-52 tie and East Islip went on to a 58-52 win over Longwood. Northport’s man-to-man defense came up with eight steals in the first quarter as it raced to a 17-4 lead and defeated Smithtown, 53-24, in the opening round of the Suffolk Shootout. Northport hosts Longwood in a second-round game Tuesday at 7 p.m. Stephanie Rom had 7 points, 7 assists and 5 steals to pace the Tigers and Kim Ruck led all scorers with 11 points.

Alicia Conquest had 35 points and 22 rebounds as Longwood rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Sachem, 63-56, yesterday and win the Suffolk Shootout Tournament at Northport.
Longwood turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and held Sachem to six points in fourth quarter. Beth Raptis was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to help hold Sachem off. Laurie Swanson led Sachem with 20 points.
