WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW SUFFOLK BOYS BASKETBALL:

Martin, Kimberley A. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 23 Dec 2007:

Defending League I champion Lindenhurst (17-5) and coach John Albano didn’t lose much. The Bulldogs almost reached the Class AA final, but Whitman was too much. Standout guard Chris Johnson is just getting back after a bout with mono and a severely sprained ankle. Guard Kamil Parzych, a 6-3 sophomore who started 12 games as an eighth grader, has also emerged as a solid scorer.

Half Hollow Hills West (13-6) is confident, said coach Bill Mitaritonna. With 6-7 sophomore shooting guard sensation Tobias Harris and 6-7 center Alex Aurrichio working the paint, there’s good reason to be.

Longwood (13-8) understands the importance of senior leadership. After graduating two key players, including leading scorer Errol Daniyan, coach Dennis Terry is left without a single one. The Lions’ success will center on their ability to move the ball and share scoring.

BRENTWOOD 72, LONGWOOD 71 Indians take League I title Chery’s free throw with 7.7 seconds left spoils Longwood rally

Martin, Kimberley A. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Feb 2008:

Jean Chery couldn’t believe his eyes – or his ears – as he watched his first free throw approach the rim.

With 7.7 seconds remaining and the score tied yesterday, Chery’s shot clanked loudly off the front rim. “It was nerve-wracking,” the Brentwood sophomore said. “I thought it was going in.”

Chery knew the subsequent Longwood timeout was called just to unnerve him, but it didn’t matter. He returned to the line and knocked down the second free throw without hesitation. Then the Indians and their home crowd breathed a sigh of relief as Brentwood edged Longwood, 72-71, to clinch the Suffolk League I title.

“I’ve been dreaming of this opportunity, so I knew I had to hit that one,” Chery said.

J.J. Moore led Brentwood with 26 points, Chery had 19 and Kendall Harris added 16.

Brentwood (11-2) grabbed the momentum late in the third quarter, extending a two-point lead to eight on two free throws by Chery and back-to-back steals by Chery and senior Tyrell Quinitchette.

The Lions struggled throughout the game to contain Moore and Harris in the paint, but Longwood (10-3) managed to wipe out a 10-point deficit with 45.2 seconds remaining, helped by three consecutive three-pointers from Anthony Cavalluzzo, Jimmy Knudsen and Kris Kelly. But Chery’s free throw broke the tie and the Lions failed to convert a final shot attempt.

“We got hot, strung a couple threes [together], made a nice run. But it’s a little too late,” said Kelly, who led Longwood with 17 points.

“We just didn’t have enough time on the clock,” said Longwood JV coach Herman Rohan, who was filling in for head coach Dennis Terry. “The kids fought hard and I give them a lot of credit.”

Though it was a much-needed victory for the Indians entering their final game against Floyd tomorrow, there were no loud celebrations.

“We thought we had the game in the bag too early and we just didn’t get back on defense,” Moore said. “We can’t do that going forward.”

Said Harris: “It doesn’t feel good looking at the scoreboard. It doesn’t really feel like a win at all.”

Brentwood coach Anthony Jimenez found optimism in the result, though.

“I wasn’t too pleased with the complacency at the end,” he said, “but you know what? A couple of our guys responded well in the closing minutes, and that’s what counts.”
