Deirdre Burns. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 21 Dec 2000:

Longwood may prove to be the sleeper of the county led by third- year veteran Brigette Kimball (171) and Susan Pitka (162).

Middle Country is back with Teresa Castillano (183), while Sachem looks to have a strong season led by newcomer Cheryl Drusin (170).

Ward Melville is stocked with six seniors led by Shannon McCarren who has increased her 158 average by 19 points. Jessica Wilson (150) will make some noise for West Islip.

Just because he lost the nucleus of his team to graduation doesn’t mean Mike Stanek is banking on a sub-par season.

“We have three returning starters so we should have a decent season,” the Sachem coach said.

Leading the way for the defending state champions are seniors Tom Scheerer (203) and Brian Flok (202) and freshman Corey Weiss (202), who averaged 230 at the state championship last season.

Look for Miller Place to try to recapture the county crown on the strength of Matt Cabble (218) and Jake Butler (215). Billy DeCicco (204) and Craig Lindahl (201) are predicted to be key pieces in the Longwood puzzle come playoff time.

Tim Modavis (211) looks to roll another perfect game for Rocky Point, while Ricky Panpandrea (213), who had the second-highest average in the county last season, will lead East Islip.

Lindenhurst has solid bowlers in Matt Atria (202) and Chris Splaine (203), while Justin Greco (207) and Mike Miezianka (202) are ready to lead Westhampton Beach.
