Sachem Captures Crown: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Deirdre Burns. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 13 Feb 2000
Brendan McGrath stood focused on the bowling lane as he was one frame shy of achieving perfection twice in one day. But after he threw his silver ball and saw three pins standing after his second ball of the 10th frame, he closed his eyes in disappointment while the standing room-only crowd rewarded his effort with a thunderous ovation.
McGrath, a senior at Sachem, rolled a perfect 300 game in the second round of the Suffolk boys bowling championships Saturday at Sports Plus in Lake Grove. After throwing 10 straight strikes, McGrath’s streak ended when he rolled a 3-6-10 spare in the final frame for a 287 game. Even though he was 13 pins short from realizing back-to-back perfection after 22 straight strikes, McGrath did not give up on the possibility of another 300 game.
“We still have the rest of the afternoon to go,” he said. “I just hope I can do it again.”
McGrath did not roll another perfect game, but he still left an impressive mark. He set county championship records for high series (788), high game (300) and highest six-game average (245) in leading the Sachem boys team to its first county championship since 1998.
Sachem also set a team record for total pins (6,534) in a championship series. Seniors Scott Weiss (235), Sean Harding (219), Sean Davidson (211) and eighth-grader Corey Weiss (201) added above 200 game averages for Sachem. Defending champion Miller Place (6,252) and Longwood (6,184) came in second and third, respectively.
Sachem coach Mike Stanek said he was impressed with his team’s results because he thought this year’s competition was tougher than last year.
“This was an excellent performance,” he said. “We rolled the best we could … and the other teams challenged us up until the end.”
Sachem will compete for the team title at the state finals March 4 in upstate Vestal. Representing Section XI are the six bowlers with the highest averages for the season: Matt Cabble of Miller Place (218.3), Jake Cutler of Miller Place (215.3), Ricky Papandrea of East Islip (213.3), Tim Modavis of Rocky Point (211.6), Jerry Figuliuolo of East Islip (211.1) and Peter Bohleber of Miller Place (210.6). The team will be coached by Stanek, the county boys bowling coordinator, at the state tournament.
