Alan Hildenbrand wears jewelry only on special occasions.

Yesterday he wore the gold ring that commemorates the 300 game he bowled in January, 1995 as he coached Longwood to the Suffolk boys bowling team championship at Sports Plus in Lake Grove.

“I told the guys that I only put on this ring when I’m feeling lucky,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for this title for 18 years. It was a long time coming.”

Longwood, which had a total pinfall of 6,269, will represent Suffolk in the state tournament in Latham on March 7. The Lions led Miller Place by one pin heading into the afternoon session and pulled away in the fifth game, bowling a 1,018. They were led by Jason Kanner, who had a high series of 719. Mike Brunjes had a 278 high game and Don Moore, Stephen Gregg and Keith Lindhal all added games over 200. Miller Place finished second with 6,019, followed by West Babylon (6,074), East Islip (5,983) and East Hampton (5,971). Defending state champion Sachem (5,918) finished sixth.

“In the fifth game, where we pulled away, no one missed a spare and that was the difference.” Hildenbrand said. “We hung in there for all six games and everyone had a big series or game to contribute.”

Longwood took third in the boys team competition (6,203). Mike Brunjes had a 1,297 series and Stephen Greg added a 267 game. Great Neck South was seventh (5,851) as Mike Lomangino had a 268 game and Dan Carman had a 1,284 series. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Mar 1998:
