Nobody’s perfect. But, for one night, 12-year-old Michael Brunjes was perfect when he bowled a 300 game in the adult-child league last Thursday at Port Jefferson Bowl. The seventh-grader, the youngest member of the Longwood varsity bowling team, also is the youngest Long Islander ever to bowl a perfect game, according to Long Island Junior Bowling Association vice president Arnold (Doc) Doctorow.

“I was real excited. It was like a dream at first,” said Brunjes, a 5-3, 105-pounder. “Everybody in the bowling alley was in my lane and they were all screaming.”

But the five-year bowling veteran kept his cool. “I was thinking about the next shot,” he said. “You don’t think about bowling 300.”

Longwood coach Alan Hildenbrand said Brunjes’ poise under pressure is what sets him apart. “It’s hard to throw a 300 game anytime because the pressure builds up,” Hildenbrand said. “The thing that is so unusual about Mike is the way he bowls and the way he handles himself. It easily compares to 17and 18-year-olds.

“He is so good,” Hildebrand added, “it’s scary.”

In the 10th frame in the second game of a match against Floyd yesterday, he struck out to lead Longwood to a win. In the third game, he rolled a 236, his best game, and Longwood won the match.
