2024

Good afternoon,

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate all 67 athletes who have made the varsity football team. This will be the largest roster in Longwood history, and is comprised of some of the best young men to walk our halls. We are looking forward to another great season, however we wanted to give you an update as to the state of the program so that you can see what we’ve been up to these last 8 months.

The Lions have been busy this offseason, diving into our community and helping give back to those who support us the most. We visited multiple elementary schools to encourage mentorship opportunities, as well as participated in many events such as Field Day, Best Buddies, and SEPTO Field day. You can see in many of the pictures how excited our younger Lions are to be hanging out with the varsity team.

In the weightroom, we had many Lions set personal and even school records. Our first session was on January 3rd and we finished up on August 8th – Eight straight months of hard work definitely paid off and the numbers show. Most notably – senior Clint Chichester set the school record with a 655 pound hex-bar deadlift.

On the field, we’ve seen great development from all Lions over the last few months. The boys have dove straight into their technique and we feel we are in a much more experienced and comfortable place than this time last year (it helps to have 40 seniors!). We are excited to compete for a county championship this fall.

In terms of resources, your boys have seen the benefit of a great fundraising effort this offseason. From our Liftathon, Team Store, and Golf Outing. We were able to support the boys in many ways. They were all given 4 dri-fit, players only t-shirts on the first day of summer practice. We’ve also added 20 Guardian Caps to our inventory and hope to get more soon. These will help decrease contact for our most “at-risk” players and keep them healthy. In addition, we’ve added two state-of-the-art Flip Sleds that you may have seen on our social media. They give us the benefits of using a tractor tire but with much more safety and stability. Lastly, all student-athletes are given a Gatorade Protein Bar after EVERY lift, this way they are optimizing protein intake and maximizing their potential growth. There’s definitely no other athlete in our district that gets taken care of more than our football players.

Parents – there will be a parent meeting tomorrow 8/27 at 7:30 p.m. in the bleachers. This will be a great opportunity to get to know your other parents, meet the staff, and find out all of the wonderful things that your boys will get to experience this fall. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Again, a huge thank you to everyone for your support. We pride ourselves on being the standard for what a Lion student-athlete should be here at Longwood. We can’t wait to see you all as we open up with the Parkway Bowl on September 14th.

Roll Pride,

Coach Sean Kluber ’06

Ja’Quan Thomas’ 3-yard TD run with 2:39 left lifts Floyd past Longwood

By Ben Dickson

Just six miles of the William Floyd Parkway separate Floyd and Longwood.

For most of Saturday’s Parkway Bowl, the nickname for the rivalry series between the school’s football programs, neither team could sustain more than a yard of distance from each other.

After Longwood tied the game on Kaden Reid’s 37-yard touchdown run and ensuing two-point conversion pass from Ryan Mandaro to Giovanni Johnson with 7:49 left, Floyd reeled off an 80-yard drive to take the lead for good.

Junior running back Ja’Quan Thomas, who had 22 carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns, punched in the go-ahead 3-yard run with 2:39 left. Longwood reached the 50 on its final drive, but Neo Dawson sealed the game with an interception at the Floyd 26 with 1:31 left.

Floyd ended the game in victory formation, securing a thrilling 36-29 home win in a Suffolk Division I opener in Mastic Beach.

“It means so much because they’re right down the road,” Floyd coach Paul Longo said. “They’re a great football program with a great tradition like we are. To come here, to play so tough today, it was just a great game.”

Floyd (1-0) has won 12 straight over Longwood (0-1) and leads the all-time series, 41-19-2.

Floyd faced a third-and-6 from the Longwood 44 on the play before Thomas’ third score. Quarterback AJ Cannet threaded a perfect 41-yard pass down the right sideline to Joshua Jordan.

“That’s Josh Jordan, Olympic track runner,” Cannet said. “He’s just so fast. It makes my life easy. Just put the ball out there, and he runs under it.”

Thomas showed glimpses of his potential after being called up from JV for Floyd’s postseason run last year, when the Colonials won the Suffolk Division I title before losing in the Class I LIC. With his downhill running style and tremendous ability to break tackles, No. 25 will have opponents’ attention all season.

“I just know I need to get them the touchdown in the end zone,” Thomas said. “Breaking tackles, grateful for my offensive line, of course. They make the holes, and I just go off that.

“I know when I need a score and my team’s counting on me, I just got to get in the end zone.”

Longwood opened the scoring as Kalen Percer ran for a 9-yard touchdown 2:51 into the game. Thomas answered with an 8-yard touchdown run to tie it at 7 with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

Floyd took a 14-7 lead on Cannet’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Jordan with 10:21 left in the second quarter.

Lions running back Davien Benjamin-Sheffey, who had nine carries for 103 yards but missed the second half with cramps, gave Longwood a 21-14 lead before halftime with touchdown runs of 68 and 3 yards.

“I think a lot of people were a little down on us,” Longwood coach Sean Kluber said. “… I think we showed today – that’s a very good football team we played, and we took them all the way to the end.”

Following a 14-play, eight-minute drive to open the third quarter, Floyd evened things at 21. The Colonials were set to kick a field goal before Longwood jumped offsides, leading to Thomas’ 4-yard touchdown run.

Floyd stuffed Longwood on fourth-and-inches on the Floyd 49 late in the third quarter. The Colonials cashed in on their next drive, as a 1-yard touchdown run by Cannet and a two-point conversion rush by Thomas made it 29-21 with 10:03 remaining.“I think a lot of people were a little down on us,” Longwood coach Sean Kluber said. “… I think we showed today – that’s a very good football team we played, and we took them all the way to the end.”

Longwood turns strip sack into touchdown as Lions’ defense dominates in win over Sachem North

Call it the strip sack, pitch for a pick-6. Now that’s a tongue twister.

It was also a game changer.

Longwood’s Mike Warren came off the edge, hit the quarterback and popped the ball into the air. Lineman Rashawn Holman caught the ball one-handed and ran a few yards before lateraling it to teammate Makai Bell.

Bell finished the third-quarter play with a 45-yard dash to the end zone to give Longwood a three-score lead in its 28-0 win over host Sachem North in a Suffolk Division I football game on Saturday in Lake Ronkonkoma.

“Mike stripped the ball and I was in the backfield and it came right to me,” Holman said. “The pitch [to Bell] was just quick thinking and trusting my teammate with the ball. It was a reaction.”

It was an incredible play that crippled any potential comeback for Sachem North, which fell to 1-3. Longwood improved to 3-1.

It was just one of a multitude of defensive plays for a Longwood unit that totaled 11 tackles for a loss and held Sachem North out of the red zone for all but one drive.

“We put it all together for the first time this season,” Longwood coach Sean Kluber said. “Our staff put out a great game plan and the defense was flying around and making plays. And I thought the offensive line really had quite a day.”

It started with Sachem’s opening drive. Holman bearhugged quarterback Luke LaRocca for a seven-yard loss on second down and Warren followed with a blindside sack for an 8-yard loss to force a punt.

“I was coming off the edge and getting deep penetration,” said Warren, who had three sacks. “The coaches put us in such a great position to make plays. All I had to do was tell my linebacker to bump out and cover me. And that let me run free.”

Longwood proceeded to go on its first of three long scoring drives. The first one went 78 yards in 11 plays and lasted over five minutes. The march was capped by a Kalen Percer 12-yard run. Dan Blank added the kick to make it 7-0 with 3:04 left in the first quarter.

The second score came after Sachem North missed a 41-yard field goal attempt. Longwood responded with a 12-play, 80-yard march that lasted 6:18 for the 14-0 lead with 54 seconds left in the half. Quarterback Ryan Mandaro scored on a 1-yard sneak.

“We have all five starters back on the offensive line and the experience shows,” Kluber said. “We let a game slip away earlier this season and our guys are focused and not letting that happen again.”

Center Gregory Princivil Jr., guards Clint Chichester and Ryan Morrissey, tackles Jordan Bennett and Michael Duarte led the way as the Lions averaged 6.5 yards per run and totaled 251 rushing yards.

“It starts with the offensive line,” said running back Davien Benjamin-Sheffey, who had 105 yards on 13 carries. “We trust them to open the holes to make the offense go.”

“We’re a very physical team,” halfback Madison Murrell said. “We come at you with a bunch of speedy and powerful backs.”

Murrell had the final impressive run for the Lions.

Sachem North put together its finest drive of the afternoon. It drove to the Longwood 13 before a fourth-down pass attempt into the end zone was ruled incomplete. A drive that started at the Sachem 14 and lasted nearly six minutes but came up empty.

Longwood answered with a seven-play, 87-yard TD march capped by Murrell’s 4-yard run with 7:47 left for the 28-0 lead.

“It was our best effort,” Kluber said. “And the division is the toughest it’s been in years, so we’ll need more performances just like this one.”

The Longwood Lions turn the football field into anything but turf.

As Lindenhurst seemed to counterattack the Lions’ every score in the second half, in the end, it just couldn’t slow down the athletic abilities of Longwood’s running backs.

With Lindenhurst prepared to tie score late, outside linebacker Mike Warren leapt high to intercept a screen pass to set up first-and-goal at the Bulldogs’ 4. Sophomore running back Kyon Sarwari followed a hole up the middle with 2:32 remaining to put it away as Longwood defeated Lindenhurst, 49-28, in a Suffolk I football game Friday night in Yaphank.

“I did a wrestling move, kind of like a sidestep and people don’t see it coming,” Sarwari said. “It comes in handy on defense, too.”

Longwood improved to 5-1. Lindenhurst fell to 4-2.

“When you play physical football like we do, it’s hard to just feature one back,” Longwood coach Sean Kluber said. “Kaden Reid and Madison Murrell are track runners. Kyon is a wrestler. He’s very shifty and has great balance and you can see that. They all bring their athleticism to the game and they did it very well.”

Davien Benjamin-Sheffey rushed 16 times for 99 yards and had two touchdowns in the first quarter. Murrell rushed eight times for 87 yards and Sarwari had nine carries for 77 yards.

Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Lindenhurst consumed the first five minutes of the third quarter with a 15-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Reece Wrightington to cut the lead to one score with 6:58 to go.

Longwood’s Reid returned the ensuing kick 26 yards to set up the Lions’ next possession on the 50. Murrell found a crease up the middle for a 29-yard touchdown run to put Longwood up 28-13 with 4:38 left.

But Lindenhurst responded with its own weapon in Wrightington, who completed a 22-yard and 24-yard pass to Alexander Burmeister and Christian Aquino to set the Bulldogs on the 1-yard line before finding Aquino for a score. Michael Russo then found Wrightington for the two-point conversion to put the Bulldogs within, 28-21.

Sarwari then rushed for 36 yards on Longwood’s next possession to get into Lindenhurst territory. He then followed a block from Reid and ran 27 yards for a score before Daniel Blank’s kick put the Lions up 35-21 with 1:31 left in the third.

Wrightington, who completed 16 of 37 passes for 247 yards, threw his final touchdown pass to Aquino with 7:38 to go before Murrell’s 36-yard touchdown run on the ensuing possession gave the Lions a 42-28 lead with 3:05 left.
