League I Championships

It takes hard, physical work to compete among the elite wrestlers on Long Island. It also takes a special mental makeup.
Donny Donnelly of Ward Melville, who won his second consecutive League I title last night at Floyd when he secured a takedown in overtime to beat Floyd’s Ryan Gerena, 5-3, at 170 pounds, attested to that.
“The first time I wrestled [on this stage], I was extremely nervous,” Donnelly said. “But with the experience, I’m able to remove all the doubt I have before matches and I’m able to get my head right before every match.”
It wasn’t all good for Ward Melville. Three-time defending state champion Nick Piccininni, who suffered a high ankle sprain in practice Tuesday, was only able to wrestle one bout, against Brentwood’s Edgar Gomez, pinning him in 2:52. Piccininni was forced to opt out of the tournament because of the injury. His forfeit loss to Brentwood’s Isac Brizuela in the semifinal round marked the end of Long Island’s longest winning streak at 170 matches. He was still able to wrestle into the semifinals to secure a spot in the Suffolk tournament next weekend.
“I knew I was going to have to wrestle with it and see how it felt afterward,” he said. “It takes constant work – I’ve been icing it every second of the day and been to physical therapy and specialists to get it under control.”
Piccininni then forfeited his third-place bout, forcing him into a fourth-place finish, but still qualifying for next week’s Suffolk tournament.
Evan Corso of Longwood won the 126-pound bracket.
Donnelly was named most outstanding wrestler for his performance, and was one of seven wrestlers who repeated as League I champions.
Among them was Brentwood senior Carlos Aucancela, who won by technical fall in 5:10 against Sachem East’s Bobby Fazio at 113 pounds.
“My mental attitude really bothered me my first couple of years wrestling,” Aucancela said. “
Aucancela said he was at the Virginia Beach Nationals in March when he realized the improvement he was making. “I finished eighth but I beat multiple state champions without knowing it,” Aucancela said. “Afterward I saw who I beat and that really helped me bring confidence into the season.”
The other repeat winners were Chris Gomez (106) and Peter Pasqualino (160) of Patchogue-Medford, Jakob Restrepo (152) and Sean Dee (285) of Sachem East and Mike D’Angelo (138) of Commack.
“I had a lot of tough matches with these guys during the regular season,” Dee, who beat Floyd’s Joe Bonamasso, 5-4, said. “It was good to know the second time around I still had the edge but going forward to counties it’s just match-by-match.”
Dee and Restrepo were among five winners from team champion Sachem East, including Brice O’Hara (99), Doug Iadanza (120) and Connor Farrell (220). Sachem East finished with 229 points. Patchogue-Medford was second with 216 and Brentwood was third with 158.5.
Farrell, Iadanza and Brett Brice of Longwood were three of the wrestlers who avenged loses in last year’s final.
Christian Araneo of Ward Melville finished third last year but was dominant, with a technical fall in 1:45 at 195 pounds over Floyd’s Jake Perkins.
“I’ve improved a lot on my feet,” Araneo said. “I’ve gotten much quicker and I can convert much better than before.”
