Bonhurst discus king

Lauterbach, Jordan. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 07 June 2014:

CICERO, N.Y. – The first part of Ben Bonhurst’s quest for New York State field supremacy is complete. The Florida State-bound senior from Smithtown West won the Division I discus yesterday, tossing 183 feet, 9 inches on the first day of the New York State Track and Field Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

“I felt fast in the circle,” Bonhurst said. “My disc was flying really well.”

On more than one occasion this year, Bonhust said, the disc has fallen out of his hands, forcing him to rely on making one good throw for all the marbles. But when the stakes were the highest, the disc stayed in his grip.

“I had a couple good throws today,” he said. “Once you get your first good throw out there, then you’re nice and relaxed and keep going with the flow.”

The second part of the quest is today. Bonhurst will compete in the Federation discus and shot put, looking to leave his stamp on his home state before heading south in September.

“Shot put is very important to me,” he said. “Shot put is everything. It’s one of the best sports I’ve ever done in my life. If I come out with gold on that, I would be more than happy.”

Longwood‘s Dennis Russell finished second in the Division I discus, at 183-0. Russell’s teammate Dashaun Taylor was second in the Division I long jump at 23-91/2.

Roosevelt’s Yusuf Young finished second in the Division II triple jump, flying 45-101/2. “I was happy with my last jump, when I was leaping in,” Young said. “I felt like my legs were getting me farther.”

Roosevelt’s 4×100-meter relay team, composed of Denzel Barnes, Neil King, Nahjeem Lowe and Raymond Jones, won the Division II state championship in 43.17 seconds. Port Jefferson’s 4×400 squad of Justin Bove, James Burke, Daniel Gross and William Witrock won the Division II title in 3:23.36.

Sachem East’s Trevor Guerrera finished second in the Division I 400 hurdles in 54.02 seconds.

Northport’s Tim McGowan was third in the 3,200 in 9:06.01. Rush-Henrietta’s Mickey Burke won in 9:03.87. Fayetteville-Manlius’ Bryce Millar was second in 9:04.28. “I think people were looking at each other, playing chicken, and waiting for someone to take it,” McGowan said.
