Taylor feels free at League I meet Longwood senior revels in thoughts to run his best Wins 55, ready for counties; Lions take team title

The time before the starting gun is one of serenity for Longwood’s Dayshaun Taylor. The senior isn’t nervous, he isn’t anxious, and he isn’t jumpy. For a few short moments, it’s just Taylor, alone with his thoughts before the business of winning gets underway.

“I like to picture myself alone on the track,” Taylor said. “Seeing myself alone gives me time to think, clear my mind, and feel free. When I’m free, I feel as if I’ve run my best.”

Taylor was all alone at the finish line as well, winning the 55 meters in 6.67 seconds at the Suffolk League I championship yesterday at Suffolk CC-Brentwood. The victory helped Longwood take the team title, scoring 116 points and topping Sachem North by nine.

The opening second of the sprint was key to Taylor’s victory.

“I had a great start,” he said. “It was one of my best starts this season. That had a big impact on my race. I was alert, on point, paid attention, and shot off with the gun.”

Taylor, who said that he has been unhappy with his starts this season, sees yesterday as a perfect jumping off point for the rest of the season.

“I’m ready for counties,” he said. “Today prepared me, attitude wise. I know my competition and I know what I have to do to beat them. I have to have the attitude that I cannot be beat and, if I am beat, I’m not going down without a fight.”

After winning the 55, Taylor walked over to the long jump pit. Despite fatigue, the senior won with a 21 foot, nine and a half inch flight.

“My third jump, I popped a good one,” Taylor said. “I got the ‘W,’ so I feel good about it. You just got to go out and do it. I don’t think about energy. I think about taking my jumps and racing at all times.”

High finishes in field events were a big reason why Longwood left the track champions. Glenn Reddick won the high jump, clearing 6-2.

“I ran in, got a good pop, and arched my back,” Reddick said. “I had to get up high and pull my head back. That pulls my hips over the bar.”

Longwood took three of the top five places in the shot put. Corey Murphy placed second with a toss of 54-10. Dennis Russell was third, throwing 54-1. Joe Rehal was fifth, tossing 45-4.

The rivalry between Murphy and Russell, who are both seniors, is a friendly one, but one that pushes them to out-hurl the other.

“He usually beat me during the first two years of shot-put, but this year I’ve turned it around on him,” Murphy said.

With the Suffolk Large School championship one week away, Longwood is feeling confident, ready for a battle with Northport, who won League II yesterday.

“We’ll be better next week,” Nigel Riley, who placed second in the triple jump, said.

Taylor, Reddick rule Longwood pair take care of business in Suffolk meet Lions pull away to break Northports string of crowns

Lauterbach, Jordan.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 Feb 2014:

The smell of victory filled the air for Longwood on Sunday morning as the team prepared to take its shot at a Suffolk County Large School Championship.

“It’s going to be a good day for Longwood,” Montavis Brown predicted as he watched the early action at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

He couldn’t have been more right. Longwood, after scoring 93 points, won the title and ended Northport’s streak of four consecutive county championships, encompassing cross country, winter and spring track.

Northport finished second with 72 points.

The reason for the win was simple, as Dayshaun Taylor told his team before the meet.

“We had a great week of practice,” Taylor said. “We just had to keep it going. No one wanted it more than us. We worked too hard this week. We weren’t satisfied with coming in second to Northport. We refused to get beat by them once again.”

Taylor backed up his words quickly, winning the 55 meters in 6.65 seconds. Brown was third in 6.77 seconds.

“It was probably one of the best days I’ve ever had,” Taylor said. “I had an amazing start. I won trials and, before finals, I had a good talk with my coach. He told me to stay focused, feel free, relax, be easy on my hands.”

Taylor also won the long jump, flying 23 feet, 1/4 inch. His teammate, Glenn Reddick, placed second, going 22-51/4.

“That’s my No. 1 man right there,” Taylor said of Reddick. “He led me to pop that 23. His jump made me want to jump farther and that made him want to jump farther. We used each other to compete and become a better team.”

Taylor still had more points to score. Along with Brown, Reddick and Kyle Watkins, he won the 4×200 relay in 1:36.01.

“I couldn’t ask for a better team,” Taylor said. “We had great handoffs and great speed.”

Success in field events was a major reason Longwood went home with a plaque almost as large as the athletes’ smiles.

In addition to his long jump prowess, Reddick cleared 6-2 in the high jump, placing second to Smithtown West’s Alexander Ladouceu.

Nigel Riley took third in the triple jump, going 45-31/4.

But it was the shot put where Longwood really shined, taking three of the top six places. Dennis Russell was second, throwing 59-111/2. Corey Murphy finished third at 56-101/2 and Joe Rehal was sixth (48-10).

Smithtown West’s Ben Bonhurst won the event, hurling the shot 63-51/2.

Russell said he decided to forgo the Longwood senior trip to Pennsylvania in favor of competing for a county championship.

As he basked in the glory of the team title, he had no regrets.

Sunday was a day that just couldn’t be missed. It was a great day for Longwood.
