WINTER SPORTS SPECIAL: TRACK & FIELD BOYS CHAMPS SET FOR NEW RUN Uniondale led be speedy Johnson; Engesser is back for Longwood
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 23 Dec 2012
In Suffolk League I, Longwood returns senior Mike Engesser. Engesser is the defending 600- meter champion, running 1:25 in the county meet last February. Longwood figures to be strong in field events, particularly shotput. Junior Dennis Russell qualified for the state meet last season. Corey Murphy also will be key to a strong shotput unit.
Ward Melville will look to challenge Longwood at the top of Suffolk County. The Patriots return Alex Fitzgerald, who is a top 1600 and 3200 meter runner. Ward Melville also returns Lloyd Webb, Christian Welch, and Connor Christian.
Bayport wasn’t the only school to succeed on League Championship Sunday. Longwood won League I behind Mike Engesser, Dayshawn Taylor and Dennis Russel. Engesser won the 600 in 1:27.38. Russel threw just under 50-1 to win the shot put, and Taylor won the long jump at 21-73/4. Jan. 28
