Longwood’s Rasheed excels Wins final at Smithtown tourney and eyes perfection Connetquot takes team crown, garnering 267 points
Korn, Evan. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Jan 2012
Longwood‘s Malik Rasheed should have been flying high. But after beating Smithtown East’s Luke Outcault with a 5-2 decision in the 138-pound final of the Smithtown Wrestling Tournament at Smithtown West, he immediately stormed through the nearest open door, took a seat outside and put his hands behind his head.
The senior, a three-time county championship place winner, aims for perfection. Winning does not necessarily cure all ills.
“I just like wrestling my best every match,” Rasheed said. “It wasn’t my best day, but I still took first. It’s not good enough, though.”
Rasheed advanced to the final with a 6-2 semifinal win over Hauppauge’s previously undefeated Sam Schwartzapfel (14-1). But as he cooled down following the championship, he candidly discussed his lack of confidence. He spoke of a need to improve his conditioning and set up his shots better to finish off overmatched foes.
His coach, Mike Picozzi, seemed a bit more optimistic.
“He had a bad injury in his ribs last year that really hampered him, and he doesn’t have that this year, Picozzi said. “He is not cutting a lot of weight and is working hard, so it will work out for him.”
Rasheed has more than a month until championship season, which he hopes will give him ample time to recapture his missing mojo.
“I don’t plan on just winning counties,” Rasheed said. “I plan on winning states as well. I’ve been wrestling since I was four to get this opportunity. This is my last year, so I guess I just have to train harder than I have been.”
Corey Rasheed, Malik’s brother, won at 145 pounds with a 6-1 decision against Smithtown East’s Eric Binder.

On Friday, Sean O’Hagan won by major decision at 120 pounds to help Sachem North clinch a 36-29 win over previously undefeated Longwood in a League I dual meet. The win snapped Longwood‘s 67-match win streak and improved Sachem North to 22-5. The Flaming Arrows of the North can clinch a tie for first place in League I with a Longwood win over Brentwood on Wednesday.
Brentwood’s Mora holds on
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 02 Feb 2012
Brentwood’s Calvin Mora took a deep breath or two, waved on the crowd for encouragement and went about the task of holding on for dear life. The 220-pound junior had a 1-0 lead and top position with 31 seconds left against Longwood‘s Brian Gutierrez.
When the match resumed, Mora put a vise grip on Gutierrez, preserving the victory that gave the Indians an eight-point lead with three matches to go.
Brentwood won two of the last three matches to prevail, 37-23, in League I. With the Indians’ win, they clinched their first League I dual meet title since 2008, breaking Longwood‘s three-year run at the top.
“We had a lot of injuries early and some things we had to overcome, but once we started getting healthy, the team came together,” Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano said.
The match started at 113, and following two Longwood decision victories, the Indians’ Marc Gonzalez pinned Joe Connolly in 1:48 at 126 pounds to even things at six apiece.
In the meet’s marquee match, Brentwood Alexis Blanco improved to 38-0 with a 5-2 decision against Malik Rasheed at 138. Scoreless after the first, a takedown early in the second gave Blanco a 2-0 lead. An escape early in the third made it 3-1, and a reversal with 20 seconds left in the match put things out of reach for Rasheed.
The 152-pounder Nicky Hall earned a pin over Luis Rodriguez to give Longwood (4-2) a 16-13 cushion.
Brentwood (6-0) evened the score at 16 when Carlos Toribio (33-4) scored a 3-0 decision over Eddie Jennings.
The Indians, trailing 20-19, took the lead for good when Joshua Barksdale pinned Michael Graterax in 1:05 at 195 pounds.

Longwood puts four in semis
Korn, Evan. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 25 Feb 2012
ALBANY – Longwood‘s Dylen Seybolt felt the metaphorical weight that had been placed upon his 170-pound shoulders.
The senior had just watched three of his teammates – senior Malik Rasheed (138), sophomore Corey Rasheed (145) and junior Nicky Hall (152) – advance to the semifinals of the state Division I tournament at Times Union Center.
Then it was his turn to make things right, to ensure all four Lions moved on to the Final Four. With an 11-4 quarterfinal win over Farrell’s Rrok Ndokaj, Seybolt completed his team’s first-day mission.
Longwood became only the third Suffolk team, and first since 1976, to have four wrestlers qualify for the state semis.
“If I didn’t make it, that would have kind of messed things up,” Seybolt (33-3) said.
The road to four semifinalists began when Malik Rasheed (31-6), a 2010 state runner-up, scored a 5-3 decision over Warwick Valley’s Shane Connolly. Minutes later, his brother, Corey Rasheed (34-2), dominated Warwick Valley’s Kyle Wierzbicki, 11-2, in a major decision.
“It motivates me, especially when my brother won right before me,” Corey Rasheed said. “I just know how special it would be if both brothers won states.”
Hall (34-3) earned his second straight state semifinal berth with a 5-2 decision over St. Anthony’s Matt Szilagyi.
For Longwood, their Day 1 state tournament success helped alleviate the disappointment of last year’s tournament, when they finished ninth as a team and had only three place-winners.
“We all took the losses hard last year, so ever since last year’s season ended, that was the beginning of this season,” Seybolt said. “And we’ve worked hard ever since.”
Malik Rasheed will meet Brentwood’s Alexis Blanco, whom he bested in the Suffolk final. Hall will take on SWR’s John Keck (46-2), who beat him, 4-2, last month.
Corey Rasheed will see North Rockland’s Mike Caputo, with whom he split a pair of decisions last month.
As for Seybolt, he will wrestle Carthage’s Shayne Brady for the first time.
If the script follows Day 1, Seybolt will find himself following three state finalists. And after playing the closer’s role once, he would like nothing more than to try it again.
“This was pretty great,” Seybolt said. “All four of us were county champs, and hopefully, we could all win states.”
