TRACK AND FIELD: Keresztes reigns
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 24 May 2011
Rain, wind, snow and hail are nothing more than words to be found in a dictionary when it comes to track and field.
Although it wasn’t quite a monsoon yesterday, there was enough wind and rain to affect performances of nearly every athlete on Day 1 of the Suffolk Boys division championships at Connetquot.
There were gripes from some parents and a few coaches concerning the weather, but the athletes did what they were supposed to do: compete.
Port Jefferson’s Andrew Keresztes, who won the Division III 800-meter championship in 1 minute, 56.95 seconds, didn’t allow the adverse conditions to faze him.
“I just try to ignore the weather conditions and keep warm before every race. That’s about all you can do,” said Keresztes, whose time was tops among all three divisions. “Staying loose and warm is the best way to fight the weather.”
Rocky Point’s Zach LeCates took second in 1:57.41.
Longwood‘s Joe Fuller won the Division I 800 championship in 1:57.73. He edged Northport’s Tim Odin (1:57.4) in a photo finish.
SUFFOLK BOYS TRACK & FIELD: Longwood Wins Division I
May 29, 2011
Speed is the name of the game in track and field and the Half Hollow Hills West boys team has an abundance of it.
Dan McCord left no doubt in the minds of many in the Long Island track community that he is one of the area’s top sprinters with victories in the 100 (10.75 seconds) and 200 meters (21.47) at the Suffolk Division II championships Wednesday.
The Princeton-bound senior wasn’t the only one to put on a show for the Colts. Teammate Abdias Myrtil took second in the 100 (10.86) and 200 (21.82), and Justin Ma won the 400 (50.0).
McCord, Myrtil and Ma teamed with Jarried Redwood to win the 4×100 relay (43.76) as West took the Division II team title with 98 points.
Huntington’s Tyriek Johnson was also a multiple winner in Division II, taking the 110 hurdles (14.72) and long jump (21 feet, 10 inches).
Karl Nilsen (13-0), Kyle Budney (12-6) and Matthew Rapp (12-6) took first, second and third in the pole vault for second-place Smithtown West, and Wade Richardson won the high jump (6-4) for third-place Copiague.
Longwood, fueled by four individual winners, exerted its strength, taking the Division I championship with 125 points.

Longwood’s 4 x 400 team edges Brentwood
By LAURA ALBANESE, June 4, 2011
If sports movies are to be believed, when Blake Evans crossed the finish line at the end of Saturday’s 4 x 400 meter relay at the Suffolk individual championship and state qualifiers, “Chariots of Fire” was playing somewhere in the distance.
OK, maybe not, but he got the other sports cliche down: He won this one by a nose.
The team, led by Evans and with Sebastian Bush, Vincent H-Soba and Joe Fuller, combined to run in 3 minutes, 19.94 seconds for Longwood — a genuine photo-finish victory over second-place Brentwood (Todd Colas, Ibrahim Abubaka, Tevin Foster and Myles Fowler), which came in at 3:19.97.
“Amazing,” coach Joe Reilly said of the day’s closest finish.
Especially considering Evans had recently finished running the 4 x 100 and, “he didn’t have a lot of rest,” Reilly said. “He was tightening up in the last 20.”
It was another banner day for Longwood track, which had Joe Payton take the 400-meter hurdles in 52.85 seconds and Shane Cruz win the pentathlon, according to Reilly.
Cruz, who had decided to forgo running the mile relay for the pentathlon, shaved four seconds off his 1,500 this year, down to 4:26, and gained strength after a season of playing tight end for the Longwood football team. After coming in third last year, he believed he had improved enough to take it all, since the event was more suited to his personality.

“I’m independent,” he said. “I didn’t want to do the 4 x 400 and mess it up.”
There was no such crisis in the pentathlon; Cruz, a senior, has been competing since ninth grade.
“I felt really confident,” he said. “My hurdle time went down, my stamina is better.”
Cruz attributed much of the strength and stamina to his time on the football team. He’s been playing for nine years, but joined the varsity only this year.
Reilly said that the reigning state federation champs are hoping for another strong year upstate, now with a mostly senior crew.
“It’s very interesting,” he said. “In some respects, they’re better, but we really have to wait and see.”
Longwood wasn’t the only strong finisher. Amityville’s Sancho Barrett took first place in the 110 hurdles with a 13.98.
STATE TRACK & FIELD: Johnson, Payton, Reynolds display their winning ways
Henry, Marcus. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 11 June 2011:
CALEDONIA, N.Y. – Repeating the same feat two days in a row in track and field isn’t the easiest thing to do.
That is the challenge several of Long Island’s top athletes will face on Day 2 of the state track and field meet at Caledonia-Mumford High School near Rochester.
Baldwin’s Ieshawn Johnson (discus, 178 feet, 7 inches), Kings Park’s Brandon Reynolds (shot put, 53-6) and Longwood‘s Joe Payton (400 hurdles, 53.6 seconds) will need to repeat Friday’s performances.
You can include Bay Shore’s Jessica Gelibert (400 hurdles, 1:00.72), Carle Place’s Joanna Koronios (discus, ‘-0) and Riverhead’s Melodee Riley (triple jump, 39-9).
Each of the aforementioned athletes won state public school titles. Each returns Saturday with the hope of capturing a Federation medal.
Johnson won the Division I discus title. “I can’t get a big head about things,” Johnson said. “I’m going to prepare for [Saturday] just like I prepared for today and try and take care of business.”
Riley, who won the Division I triple jump, concurred. “I’ll just rest and stretch a little,” Riley said. “You don’t want to change anything now, because it can really mess you up.”
Koronios, who won the Division II discus and has been fighting lower leg and foot injuries all season, said she is going to put more emphasis on her spinning. “It’s been difficult, but I’ve been pushing through,” said Koronios, who set the Nassau record in the discus (150-6) this season. “I’ve been working more on technique and spins to compensate.”
The Garden City girls 4×400 team of Laura Jaeger, Emma Gallagher, Taylor Hennig and Michelle Gallagher won the Division I title in 3:47.88 and Mercy’s Kayleigh Macchirole, Olivia Schumann, Sasa Vann and Lauren Woodhull took the 4×400 Division II title in 3:57.42.
Southampton’s Nicholas Collazos, James Cowell, Owen Laub and Adrain Simioni teamed to capture the 4×400 Division II title in 3:22.84.
