As cousins, Mikaiya Moore and Ihnacinse Grady have a good connection with each other since they have played together since they were young. The Copiague duo also play AAU and summer league together and spent last season on varsity.
This season they hope to make a deep run in Suffolk Class AA after losing in the first round last year. Early indications are the young combo is ready to lead Copiague.
Moore, a freshman, had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots and the sophomore Grady had 13 points in a 54-46 home win over Longwood yesterday in non-league girls basketball. Kiersten West scored 20 of her 23 points in the second half for Longwood (1-1).
“She’s an excellent player,” Moore said of Grady. “I love how she gets everyone the ball in good spots.”
Grady did that in the third quarter as Moore scored nine points to give Copiague (2-0) a 40-30 lead after three. The fourth quarter was a parade to the free-throw line. Copiague had three players foul out and two fouled out for Longwood.
The teams attempted 35 free throws combined in the fourth quarter. West hit a pair of free throws with 1:11 left to bring Longwood within 49-45. Longwood had a chance to make it a one possession game, but missed a jumper with 40 seconds left.
Grady hit two key free throws with 22 seconds left to push the Copiague lead to 52-46. Grady hit all six of her free throws in the final quarter.
“We needed the free throws,” Grady said. “We missed too many. I stepped to the line and knocked them down.”
Copiague played strong defense throughout, deflecting many passes and made it difficult for Longwood to set up its offense. “They’re a really good team,” Moore said. “We played really good defense. We just kept it together at the end. Defense wins games.”
Moore is going to be a big part of the Eagles winning games. The 6-foot forward gets a lot of attention from the opposition and is expected to be the focal point as a 14-year old.
“She’s incredibly talented,” Copiague coach Carole Olsen said. “We ask a lot of her, but she can handle it.”

Werbitsky clutch Basket in final seconds forces OT for Harborfields Five of her 15 points are in OT; O’Connor scores 19
CREPEA, JAMES. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 30 Dec 2011
Amy Werbitsky already had taken care of the difficult part. The Harborfields junior made the game-tying basket in the closing seconds of regulation, and then found herself standing at the free-throw line with a chance to increase the Tornadoes’ overtime lead.
“I was thinking what we do during practice and how much I practice and how much I know that I can make this,” Werbitsky said of her free-throw attempts. She made one of two with 16 seconds remaining in overtime.
Senior Alexia O’Connor had a career-high 19 points and Werbitsky had five of her career-high 15 points in overtime as Harborfields rallied to beat Longwood, 61-58, yesterday in the first round of the Suffolk Shootout at Northport.
Harborfields plays host Northport in the final today at 3 p.m.
Harborfields trailed 54-52 with 9.7 seconds left in regulation when O’Connor raced upcourt and dished the ball to Werbitsky at the top of the key. The 5-10 forward made a move toward the basket and tried to draw contact as she went up and scored to tie it at 54 with 3.4 seconds left.
“I thought that since the ball came to me I have to do what I was taught and be strong and draw the foul,” said Werbitsky, who also had eight rebounds. “I didn’t get the foul but I finished so it paid off . . . It felt amazing but we did it as a team and it wasn’t just one possession.”
O’Connor also had eight assists and six rebounds, fouling out 19 seconds into overtime. Harborfields (6-0) persevered in overtime without O’Connor, Kasey Stolba (10 points), who also fouled out, and Bridgit Ryan, who is recovering from an ankle injury.
The game was extremely competitive, with 12 lead changes and 10 ties. Kiersten West had 14 points, Tiffany Ruiz added 13 and Sade Holmes and Makeda DeSouza each had 12 for Longwood (2-2).
Tigers roll. Northport defeated Kings Park, 56-41, in the other first-round game. Allie Clarke had 21 points for the Tigers (2-2), who trailed 34-33 after three quarters but outscored Kings Park 23-7 in the fourth. Kings Park (6-1) and Longwood play in the consolation game today at 1 p.m.

LINDENHURST 51, LONGWOOD 42: Oyakhilome provides a spark Reserve scores 11 of her 14 points in second half Crehan, Ingenito add 10 points each for Bulldogs
Ronis, Adam. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Jan 2011:
Valerie Oyakhilome’s job has been to come off the bench and provide some offense for the second unit in her first year on Lindenhurst’s varsity. But the 5-9 sophomore forward has played so well that her minutes are the second most on the team.
Oyakhilome showed why last night.
After a lackluster first half for Lindenhurst, Oyakhilome scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half and added nine rebounds in a 51-42 win over visiting Longwood in Suffolk League I girls basketball.
“We had some jitters early on,” Oyakhilome said. “We played more as a team, used screens and developed plays in the second half.”
Oyakhilome hit a jumper with 32 seconds left in the third quarter to give Lindenhurst the lead for good at 32-31. Stephanie Ingenito scored on a drive to give Lindenhurst a three-point lead, but Alyson Osieki scored on a putback as time expired in the third to pull Longwood (3-5, 1-3) within 34-33. Oyakhilome scored on a pass from Colleen Ames to give Lindenhurst a 36-33 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
“She’s our secret weapon,” Lindenhurst coach Greg Flynn said of Oyakhilome. “No one really knows about her. She’s bailed us out a lot.”
Added Ingenito: “She was killing it on JV last year. She’s early to practice and stays late to work on her shooting. Teams are finding out about her now. She’s blowing up.”
It was needed on a night when the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Ames, was held to three points. Ingenito had 10 points and six steals and Shannon Crehan had 10 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots for Lindenhurst (7-1, 4-0).
“That’s a great sign,” Flynn said. “We’ve been dependent on Colleen’s scoring. They keyed on her and it provided an opportunity for everyone else.”
Lindenhurst had a poor first half and trailed 23-17. Ingenito sparked the defense with several steals in the third quarter, keying an 8-0 run that gave Lindenhurst its first lead at 25-23 with 4:58 left in the period. Asja Mayo scored on a putback to tie the score at 25 before Oyakhilome scored on a three-point play to make it 28-25.
One of the biggest baskets of the game came in the fourth quarter when Crehan hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, giving the Bulldogs a 39-33 lead. Aliyah Blake scored to get Longwood as close as 45-42 with three minutes left in the game before Oyakhilome hit a jumper from the corner with 2:44 left to push the lead to 47-42.
Lindenhurst made the playoffs last season for the first time since 1993 and the nucleus of the team has been together for three seasons.
“It was a step making the playoffs,” Ingenito said. “We have some flaws that we need to work on, but we’re playing well.”
