Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Dec 2010:

In news that will surprise few, East Islip is again the favorite among Suffolk girls bowling teams. The Big Red Machine churns out elite bowlers each year without fail. The Lady Redmen return with a loaded roster led by Tara Ernst (203 average) and Nancy Baione (192). Sophomore Lena Sorrentino led Long Island with a 215.2 average and this year could challenge the record of 218.4, held by former teammate Ali Martin.

Middle Country, however, is the reigning county champion after upsetting East Islip in the county tournament and coming within 47 pins of a state title. Middle Country returns Melissa Sherwin and Kelly Skalacki, who, along with up-and-comers Sarah Harley and Eva Meyer, should keep the Cougarines in contention.

Longwood, third in the county meet, has a talented young group led by Brianna Meyer (187) and Kylie Spillett. Islip lost its best two bowlers but will remain competitive with Lori Greenblatt and Angelina Macaluso. Patchogue-Medford, the 2008 champion, should contend with Zulfiye Bademci. Commack has talent, led by Alana Norotsky and Jackie Castelli. Sachem North, with all-star Kathryn Rivera (193), North Babylon, with Abigail Casale, and Comsewogue, with Deanna Clark, will all be in the mix.

The Suffolk All-Star bowling teams, which were comprised of the top five averages in the county and the winner of the Suffolk singles tournament, will compete against fellow sectional All-Star teams at the state tournament in Syracuse on March 6.

Leading the boys All-Star team will be Matt Skalacki of Middle Country, who set a new Suffolk county record with a 232.7 average. He will be joined by Jeremy Milito (229 average) and Steve Sabella (219.3) of Sachem East, Gregg Reed (220) of Smithtown, Josh Sposito (218) of Lindenhurst, and Joseph Pontorno (217.8) of Hauppauge.

Representing the girls will be Middle Country’s Melissa Sherwin, who finished with the highest average among Long Island girls with a 215.3 and also won the singles tournament. She is joined by her teammate Kelly Skalacki (206.2), Jessica Calandra (206) of Patchogue-Medford, Brianna Meyer (204.8) and Kylie Spillett (198.3) of Longwood and Lori Greenblatt (197.1) of Islip.

SECTIONAL ALL-STAR BOWLING:

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 07 Mar 2011:

East Meadow’s Erica Tuthill, the only senior among six LI girls competing yesterday, could admit she was “definitely not” the most mature of the group.

“Fun” was the operative word for Long Island’s stars. The bonding on the long bus rides and good times with friends are most memorable for Tuthill, who shot 1,026 in her last high school event.

So although Section II toppled 5,748 pins to win, and Suffolk (5,425) and Nassau (5,318) took fifth and sixth, respectively, spirits remained high.

“We obviously wanted first, but this wasn’t bad. We enjoyed ourselves,” Middle Country freshman Kelly Skalacki said. Last year, she helped lead a comeback en route to second place in an emotional state tournament. This time, as an All-Star, “it’s much more relaxed.”

Sewanhaka District’s Rebecca Gotterbarn bowled a 1,144 series and Carle Place’s Dhara Kadakia 1,055 to lead Nassau. Melissa Sherwin (Middle Country) had 1,084 and Lori Greenblatt (Islip) 1,057 for Suffolk. Longwood‘s Kylie Spillett had the tournament’s second-highest game with a 233 and Gotterbarn and Kayla Cappuzzo both rolled 226 to tie for third.
