WINTER PREVIEW WRESTLING

Korn, Evan. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Dec 2010

SUFFOLK

The fates finally appear to be aligned for Longwood. After third-place Suffolk finishes the last two years, the Lions – who return seven All-County wrestlers from last year – are poised to make a run at the team title.

“It would mean a lot to me for the kids,” coach Mike Picozzi said. “These kids have dedicated themselves and, in my opinion, deserve to win. Now, they just have to get it in their minds that they will do this.”

The All-County returnees include Corey Rasheed, who finished fourth at 103 pounds last season and will settle in at either 112 or 119. Casey Brice and Malik Rasheed (runner-up at 112 pounds) should compete for individual titles at 125 and 130 pounds. Nick Hall will move up to 140 or 145 after a fourth-place showing at 135 in 2009.

Picozzi now must find a way to piece together the rest of his lineup. “Trying to get everyone in the lineup is our big thing,” he said. “We have so many kids that have really dedicated themselves to wrestling that you want to give them as many matches as you can.”

LONGWOOD 46, BRENTWOOD 18 Palmer quick study His big pin changes the momentum, delivers victory From football field to mat, he has a knack for it

Korn, Evan. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Jan 2011

Longwood heavyweight wrestler Omari Palmer ambled to the mat with his team facing a 9-0 deficit inside Brentwood’s gym. The momentum, two matches into a Suffolk League I dual meet, belonged to the hosts.

Then, Palmer decided to flip things around.

His pin of Brentwood’s Josue Iglesias at 3:13 narrowed the deficit to three, and by match’s end, the Lions had rolled to a 46-18 win Friday night.

“It was a great adrenaline rush,” Palmer said.

A two-way lineman on the football team, the junior has been wrestling for only a month, slimming down from upward of 320 pounds to make the 285 limit. “I talked to my assistant principal [Adam DeWitt], and he said it would be great for football,” Palmer said. “I then talked to coach [Mike] Picozzi, and he said we can always use extra guys.”

After lifting with the wrestling team during the offseason to cut some weight, he gave it a try.

To no one’s surprise, the big guy with a knack for tackling in the backfield picked up this wrestling thing like a natural.

“He moves very well,” Picozzi said. “We knew that he wanted to learn. He has been learning new things every day.”

With Palmer’s pin an ideal jumping-off point, Longwood took a 10-9 lead in the 96-pound bout, when Anthony D’onofrio took a 10-9 decision from Danny Murray. Corey Rasheed’s 59-second pin of Eric Orellana, 14-2 entering the match, at 112, extended the lead to 22-9.

With Longwood leading 31-9, two of the Island’s top grapplers, the Lions’ Malik Rasheed and Brentwood’s Alex Gomez, matched up at 130. After a scoreless first period, Gomez, a natural 125-pounder, broke the deadlock on a two-point takedown in the second.

Tied at 2, Gomez took the lead on a stalling penalty with a minute remaining in the third and held on for the win.

“My motto is: to beat the best, you have to wrestle the best,” Gomez said.

Gomez’s win did not blunt the Lions’ momentum, which began with Palmer’s out-of-nowhere tour de force.

After his pin, with his teammates yelling and backslapping, the wrestling newbie walked back to the sideline with the slightest of grins.

“Inside, I was pretty much screaming and jumping up and down,” Palmer said. “But sportsmanship … you gotta have it.”

MALIK RASHEED

LONGWOOD

130 pounds, junior

It’s been a gradual ascent to the top for Longwood’s Malik Rasheed. He won the Suffolk League I title the past three years. He lost to Huntington’s Nigel McNeil for the county title at 112 pounds. Then Rasheed battled his way through the state tournament to meet McNeil in an All-Suffolk final in Albany. McNeil overpowered Rasheed for an 11-2 win and the state crown.

“He ran into a guy that beat him twice,” Longwood coach Mike Picozzi said. “But he’s moved on and his goal is to win the county crown first. He’s not looking past people to get back to the state title. If he looks too far ahead, he’ll lose sight of what’s in front of him. There are too many good wrestlers to beat just to get there.”

Rasheed surpassed the 100-win milestone last year. The two-time county runner-up hopes to avoid anyone from Huntington in the final. His loss in 2009 came at the hands of the Blue Devils’ Damon McQueen, another eventual state champion.

“Yeah, he only loses to the best guys,” Picozzi said.

Thcis year, Rasheed wants to be the best.

SUFFOLK WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Longwood takes team and two individual titles

Sarra, Gregg. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 15 Feb 2011

Longwood‘s Nicky Hall said the pictures in the team wrestling room are constant reminders of the stars who have passed through those walls. His father, Nick, a two-time county champion in 1990-91 and a state champ in 1991, is one of them.

“All the pressure is gone, lifted completely off my shoulders,” Hall said after he captured the 145-pound class with a 4-0 win over Sachem East’s top-seeded Sean O’Malley. “I wanted to win so badly and have my name up there with his and the rest of the great Longwood wrestlers.”

Longwood, the team champion with 191 points, crowned a second county champ when Patrick Jennings turned in a 5-0 win over Connetquot’s Nick LoBue at 160. Jennings improved to 33-2 with his win over LoBue, who had 110 career wins.

SUFFOLK WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Connetquot’s McCabe wins title First county champ for school since 1999 Longwood takes team and two individual titles

Sarra, Gregg.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 15 Feb 2011:

An exhausted Sean McCabe found solitude in the open air behind the Indoor Sports Arena at Stony Brook University. McCabe had stepped from the confines of the arena and into the cooling comfort of a 35-degree night to soak in his greatest triumph.

McCabe, who was named most outstanding wrestler, sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy with a spectacular takedown 46 seconds into overtime to edge Longwood’s Corey Rasheed, 5-3, to capture the 112-pound Suffolk County Division I wrestling championship last night before 3,400 fans in Stony Brook.

As McCabe, only a junior, sucked in the cold air, the moment seized hold of his emotions, and tears rolled down his face. The accomplishment, the one all wrestlers dream about, was finally his.

“I stayed away from his long shot and got myself in a good position to score,” McCabe said. “I thought I was patient in overtime. When I finally broke his grip, I got behind him and hooked his heel for the takedown and the win.”

McCabe looked up at the official for confirmation that the title was his, before he released Rasheed. Connetquot which has won a league title in seven of the last eight years, crowned its first county champion since Joe Patrovich earned the 160-pound title in 1999.

“Three of the toughest kids I ever coached live in the same house,” laughed Connetquot coach Bill Santoro, who has guided the Thunderbirds for the past 33 years. “His father Kevin was an All-County wrestler in 1982, and his brother James was All-County last year. It was like real good, better, and best.”

Ward Melville eighth-grader Nick Piccininni beat Kings Park’s Andrew Roden, 10-0, to open the championship round at 96 pounds. Piccininni is the first champion at Ward Melville since Cole Ferraro won the 285-pound county crown in 2000. He’s also the first eighth-grader to win a county title in Suffolk Division I since Jesse Jantzen of Shoreham-Wading River earned the crown at 91 pounds in 1995.

Huntington senior Nigel McNeil earned his second county title with a 5-1 win over Central Islip’s Giovanni Sanchez at 119 pounds. McNeil, the top ranked wrestler in the state, improved to 36-0 and extended his winning streak to 76 bouts.

Longwood’s Nicky Hall said the pictures in the team wrestling room are constant reminders of the stars who have passed through those walls.

Glenn also crowned three champs in James DeKrone at 130 pounds, Ken Meinsen at 135 and Joe Giaramita at 189 as the Knights finished second in the team scoring with 130 points.

In the Division II tournament, the persistence of Center Moriches heavyweight Connor Murphy paid off. The two-time county runner-up added a Suffolk title to his achievements when he edged Harrison DeSousa of Bayport-Blue Point, 1-0, to win the 285-pound crown.

“It was three years in the works,” Murphy said. “I dedicated my season to a Suffolk police officer, John Baldwin, who died last year. He used to come and work out with me. He’d be proud.”

Bayport-Blue Point scored a record 359.5 points, led by the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler Jeff Purdy at 135 pounds. Purdy was one of six champions for the Phantoms. Babylon’s Matt Rodriguez had the most pins in least amount of time with four in 3:16 at 135 pounds. And Mattituck’s Thomas Filipowski was voted the champion of champions after winning the 160-pound crown.
