Double high-fives, Florida Gator-like chomp claps and kicks, all soundtracked by chants, cheers and guttural screams. Then it all stopped, as if parents had walked in on an unsanctioned house party.
The Middle Country girls bowling team huddled and held hands. Some said prayers. Others fought tears.
Then the announcement was made: Suffolk County champions.
“We thought we had it, but we didn’t want to jinx anything,” said Nancymarie Joseph, whose team won its first title. “We were nervous.”
The upstart Cougarines were poised when it mattered, upsetting favored East Islip, 6,083-6,062, at Sayville Lanes. Longwood took third and Islip fourth. Feb. 9
