LONGWOOD 31, BRENTWOOD 17: Renck’s OT win spurs a victory He forgets about a 2nd period, then wins anyway Rasheed brothers provide insurmountable margin
Mascaro, Chris. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 14 Jan 2010
Ricky Renck was oblivious last night, but for Longwood, that was a good thing.
Content that his job was complete, the Lions’ 145-pounder unbuckled his headgear and began to walk off the mat.
Not so fast.
Though he took a two-point lead in the first 30-second period of the second overtime on a reversal, he forgot that double overtime was comprised of two 30-second periods.
Renck won the match regardless, 4-2, and then strolled off the mat completely unaware that he just foiled Brentwood’s match strategy.
Longwood took a three-point lead on Renck’s win and never trailed again, earning a 31-17 victory over visiting Brentwood in a League I wrestlingmatch.
After forfeiting to Nicky Hall at 135 pounds (in what would have been the second bout of the evening), Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano bumped his next three wrestlers up a weight class in order to get what he believed was the best matchups.
“Their horses are there in the middle weights and I felt that was our only chance to win,” Napolitano said of his move. “That double-overtime match kind of threw everything off.”
Renck used a third-period escape to force overtime against Brentwood’s Jonathon Falconi, and after neither wrestler scored in the first OT, Renck used a switch to reverse Falconi and take the lead for good.
“I thought it was over,” Renck said about why he walked off the mat prematurely. “When it gets into the heart of our lineup, that’s when we go to work. We let the other stuff work itself out.”
Longwood coach Mike Picozzi believes Napolitano may have jumped the gun on rearranging his lineup. “They started panicking I think,” he said. “At that point in the match, you don’t know what is going to go down.”
Brothers Corey (103 pounds) and Malik Rasheed (112), both returning All State performers, earned victories to put Longwood out of reach. Corey got three near fall points on a cradle, and a reversal in the second period to take a 7-6 lead over Eric Orellana. He chose bottom in the third and neither wrestler scored in the final period.
Napolitano was irate with the official for not whistling Corey for stalling as he clammed up on bottom, and his arguing led to a loss of one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Rasheed brothers the foundation for deep Longwood squad
It’s hard to argue with Glenn, Hauppauge and Rocky Point as the top three teams in Suffolk, as each has built quite an impressive resume through the first two months of the season.
But it’s hard to discount Longwood as a contender for the county title based on its depth. In addition to two returning All State wrestlers — brothers Corey (103 pounds) and Malik Rasheed (112) — the Lions (16-0, 2-0 League I) boast All County performers Casey Brice (125), Nicky Hall (135, who received a forfeit last night), and Ben Lee (285), who didn’t wrestle in the optional weight class last night. Patrick Jennings, who was a League I finalist last season, is currently the third-ranked wrestler at 152 pounds, while last night’s star, Ricky Renck, is fourth at 145.
Of those seven key cogs in the Longwood lineup, only Lee is a senior. Corey Rasheed (pictured scoring back points in his 7-6 win over Eric Orellana last night) is an eighth-grader, while Malik Rasheed and Hall (who is wrestling through a knee injury) are both freshman.
Those three burst onto the scene with spectacular results last season, and are trying to avoid regressing as they grow and move up in weight, as so many wrestlers do.
Said Corey: “When you do good one year, guys that face you the next year are always trying to get their names known. So you have to practice hard. I always put pressure on myself.”
Last night, Longwood won seven of 12 bouts against a talented Brentwood squad en route to a 37-17 League I win. With wins over Sachem East (32-22) and now Brentwood, the Lions have positioned themselves as the favorites for the League I dual-meet title. They also are a good bet to win their first League I tournament title since 2000.
But for now, coach Mike Picozzi, is content with last night’s win.
Said the coach: “Any time you beat Brentwood, it’s a good day.”

Rasheeds key to title Wins by Corey, Malik polish Longwood’s crown Lions prove themselves contenders for Suffolk title
Mascaro, Chris. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 07 Feb 2010
Corey Rasheed was exhausted and his hip was strained, but he was victorious.
The 103-pound eighth-grader didn’t revel in his second League I title for long, though. As he paced back and forth behind the finalists’ bench trying to catch his breath, his eyes remained fixed on his brother Malik’s match.
Malik wrapped up his third straight League I championship last night at Commack, then the 112-pound sophomore settled in on the bench next to his brother to watch their cousin, Longwood 145-pounder Ricky Renck, compete.
For Longwood, which won its first League I tournament title since 2000, every meet is a family affair.
“Our team is like one big family,” Malik said.
And he’s not kidding. Renck’s and the Rasheeds’ fathers both wrestled for Longwood, as did Nick Hall, the father of 135-pound runner-up Nicky Hall, who is now a Longwood assistant.
“They all wanted their kids to have the wonderful opportunity to wrestle for me,” Longwood coach Mike Picozzi said jokingly. “It’s a close-knit group.”
Still baby-faced but no longer wide-eyed, the Rasheeds have emerged as the top wrestlers for Longwood, a team that is in a small group of contenders for the Suffolk crown, which will be decided next weekend. Each was a county runner-up last season, and both placed at the states (Corey second at 96 and Malik fifth at 103) after earning a wild-card berth to the state tournament.
“I’m just focusing on right now, this is the only thing I look forward to,” Corey said about the end-of-season tournaments. “I put a lot into this. Sometimes I get over-nervous.”
It didn’t show on the mat at Commack last night, as the junior-high student showed the poise of a veteran in his 6-4 win over Brentwood’s Eric Orellana. Off the opening whistle, he was in on a double-leg takedown, and he added two near-fall points on his favorite move, a cross-face cradle to take a 4-0 first-period lead. He went up 6-0 on a second-period takedown.
But his energy seemed to be sapped soon after, as he tweaked an injured right hip he’s been battling the past couple of weeks.
“I couldn’t sit-out with it,” he said after the match. “When I extend it, it hurts.”
As a result, he had trouble standing up from the bottom position in the third period and was penalized for stalling four times (the first is a warning), resulting in all four of Orellana’s points.
Malik used a takedown and three near-fall points on a near-side cradle, his favorite move, to secure a 5-0 victory over David Chaverra of Brentwood.
Last season, Kings Park’s Soria brothers made headlines at the state tournament, as Max forfeited to his brother Mike in the state semifinals. Mike went on to beat Corey Rasheed, 7-0, in the state final. Both Corey and Malik agreed that, even if they were in the same weight class, they wouldn’t take the mat against each other.
“We wouldn’t wrestle each other,” Malik said. “We’ll push each other and we’ll wrestle around at home sometimes, but that’s it.”
After all, their goal is to take care of business outside the family.
