SUFFOLK
Thanks to a deep squad with Darlene Eiermann (600, high jump), Danielle Rowe (600), Destiny Lalane (race walk), Alexis Barrau (long jump), Kathryn Glynn (relays) and Essence Rogers (sprints) Bay Shore is poised to repeat as large school champs.
Ward Melville, led by the experienced distance combination of Caroline O’Hea and Mary Kate Anselimini, will challenge Bay Shore. Sami Reilly (3,000) and Emily Brownawell will provide depth in distance events. Northport also has depth with Kelly Abbate, Lianne Farber, Brigid Brennan and Elizabeth Fierro. Olga Janiak will emerge as a factor in the 55 hurdles and Sara Ronde should excel in the 600. North Babylon’s Vanessa Stewart should retain her title as the Island’s top shot putter, while Natalie Gadsden will lift the Bulldogs in sprints. Sachem East will contend with standouts Lisa Luchsinger, Melanie Notarstefano and Megan Power and Samantha Maurice in the high jump.
Jenny Johnston (distance), Olivia Hallstein (300) and high jumper Jordyn Holt lead Longwood, while Commack is paced by Allison Stapleton, Erin Neville and Lisa Pellegrino in distance and Colby Lubman (jumps).
In the small schools, Tara Greco (long jump), Cookie Wyckoff (sprints) and Christine Hagan will make Kings Park a contender. Mount Sinai should be right in the mix with Janie Turek, Janet Mellor, while Carly Rosen and Nyashia Hibbert will keep Half Hollow Hills West in the fold.
Islip has several young runners in sophomores Kristina Lerikos, Sara McGarry and Olivia Carroll and eighth-grader Nikki Cervone to rely on, while Sayville is led by Kerri Culhane and Kim Grabow in distance and Lauren Tamburello in the high jump. Miller Place is led by Casey Browne and Katie DuBois in the jumps, while Mackenzie Pendergast (hurdles), Shannon McDonnell (300, jumps) and Danielle Opatovsky (race walk) will lead Shoreham-Wading River. – Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y.
