LARGE SCHOOLS Preview
Middle Country, coming off an undefeated season in League I and claiming the Division I title last spring, is poised for another run. It lost seniors Josh Hunter and Gregg Ellis but has the county’s best sprinter in Miles Lewis, along with Ian Haney, Mark Dixon and Stephan Davis. With its explosive team speed, the 4×100 relay team is dominant. In addition, it has added depth, nearly doubling the roster since winter, and is expected to do well in the 4×400 relays.
If there’s such a thing as sports momentum and its carryover, Sachem North might possess it. The Flaming Arrows finished 13th in the spring championship a year ago, but led by Anthony Quezada and Frank Fezza emerged in the winter and dominated the Large Schools championship.
Other contenders include Longwood, which took second in the spring championships and has standout shot-putter Rob Smith and distance runner Shane Cruz. Northport should also do well with its strong distance-running team. Bellport went 6-0-1 in League IV and is led by winter 300-meter champ Jaquan Holland. Smithtown West took Division 2 with strong showings in the pentathlon and jumps, but lost several seniors, including Giovanni Signoretti and Andrew Coletti. It still is a quality team with jumper Chris Ammann. Half Hollow Hills West, with Harold Jamison and Jared Squires, will be in the mix. Its 4×800 relay was one of six teams to clock under eight minutes in the National Scholastic Indoor Championship. North Babylon has good sprinters.
