Girls Bowling Preview
With East Islip heavily stocked with skillful pin pushers, you can expect Harold Cooley’s team to contend for another county title this year and for many more years to come.
“I have three seventh-graders and one ninth-grader,” Cooley said. “They are all getting better and they are all dying to get into matches.”
Patchogue-Medford poses a threat to EI with five dynamic bowlers. Senior Danielle Cessman has stepped up her game this season, upping her average from 191.77 to 210.8, and sophomore Zulfiye Bademci has raised her average from 189.53 to 210.7. Eighth-grader Jessica Calandra (194.4), senior Ariel David (184.4) and junior Emma Flynn (181.1) are all bowling well.
Not far behind is Islip with juniors Alex Devries (193.6) and Vicky Trezise (192.2), Sachem East with junior Stephanie Guzik (181.3), junior Kim Gioia (180.2) and Janine Guzzo (181.1) and Longwood with seniors Amelia Tonyes (189.7), Kaitlin Caspar (189.3) and Kristen Thristino (183.8).

Caspar, Tonyes lead Longwood girls bowlers
Jimenez, Marc. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 14 Jan 2009:
After Longwood took three games against Sachem North in a Suffolk League II bowling match at Sayville Lanes yesterday, Kaitlin Caspar bragged that Longwood’s chemistry is better than any other team’s.
Whether such a statement is true is not important. What is of importance is that the Lions are very confident.
Caspar posted scores of 210, 183 and 207 for a 600 series as Longwood defeated Sachem North, 947-857, 1,010-863, 941-864. Teammate Amelia Tonyes rolled 166, 190 and 180 for a 536 series.
Caspar and Tonyes are averaging better than 185 and are in the top 15 in Suffolk.
“Every time I go out there,” Caspar said, “I say to myself, ‘I’ve got to hit the pocket.”‘
It’s a simple philosophy that has worked for Caspar, who had six strikes in Game 1 and again in Game 3.
But Longwood isn’t only two girls. The Lions have five strong bowlers averaging 170 or better. Longwood (11-0-1) punched its ticket to the county tournament, yet in spite of this, the team is feeling a bit slighted.
“We are definitely overlooked,” Caspar said, referring to the amount of attention East Islip gets. “I know East Islip is good, but we’re just as good as them. I know what we’re capable of doing.”
Looks like the perception of being overlooked has created a team with an attitude to win it all this year.
“East Islip has to be considered the favorite , but it’s a total wood tournament,” Longwood coach Steve Abrams said. “If they hit a streak of bad luck and we hit a streak of good luck …”
Abrams stopped there. As if proclaiming his team could beat mighty East Islip would somehow upset the bowling gods.

SUFFOLK BOWLING: Cessman key to PM’s upset Undefeated E. Islip girls must settle for second place
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Feb 2009
Danielle Cessman was big time on the big stage. The senior rolled seven straight strikes to close her sixth and final game yesterday to lead Patchogue-Medford to the Suffolk girls team championship in an upset over East Islip.
East Islip had won 117 straight matches, and was undefeated in league competition for the past eight years, though Patchogue-Medford had given them a fight at the county level.
Cessman finished with a 257 on a day on which many of Suffolk’s top bowlers struggled at Sayville Lanes. Patchogue-Medford will travel to the state championships in Rochester on March 7-8.
“The last time we won the county title [2006], I was only a freshman,” said Cessman, who will attend Briarcliffe College on a bowling scholarship. “And I wanted to go out with a title in my senior year.”
Patchogue-Medford totaled 5,754 pins to East Islip’s 5,708, Middle Country’s 5,477 and Longwood‘s 5,425.
