Wrestling PREVIEW
Islip, behind Kyle Wade at 145 pounds, and Sayville, led by Travis Pitre at 140, are in the mix. The Jan. 16 match between Brentwood, the defending Suffolk champion, and Longwood should determine the League I champion. Brentwood returns Josue Mendez, who placed sixth in the state last season at 171 pounds, and Longwood boasts defending county runner-up Ernest James at 215 and a host of young guns – seventh-grader Cory Rasheed (96 pounds), his eighthgrade brother Malik (103), eighth-grader
Nicky Hall (112) and sophomore Casey Brice at 119. “Longwood is our No. 1 rival,” Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano said. “I think we can hang with anyone in the league. We’ve got a good group of kids.”c

WRESTLING: Eighth-grader Hall saves Longwood
Mascaro, Chris. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 17 Jan 2009
When it was all over, eighth-grader Nicky Hall said his coaches had confidence in him all along.
“They all said that if they could pick one person on the team they’d want to go last,” Hall said, “they’d want me.”
And with good reason.
The 112-pounder pinned Humberto Garcia with 23 seconds remaining in the second period to give Longwood a 27-26 win at Brentwood on Friday night. It was Brentwood’s first League I wrestling loss in four seasons.
Longwood (3-0) looked finished after William Brooks gave Brentwood (2-1) a 26-12 lead after his one-point victory at 189 pounds. Even coach Mike Picozzi thought that might be it for his squad.
“I wasn’t too hopeful,” the coach said. “But Hall kept wiling his way and eventually got him.”
Hall, whose father Nick is an assistant coach, had wrestled Garcia four times before Friday night, and though Hall won each time, he had never pinned Garcia. But the Brentwood wrestler took the bottom position to start the second period and Hall locked up with a bar arm, and inevitably turned him. Garcia braced the first time, but Hall drove him over again – this time for the pin.
When asked if he thought it was strange to see Garcia choose down to start the second period, knowing that his bread-and-butter move was the bar arms from the top position, Hall retorted: “It doesn’t matter; pick your poison.”
Hall’s bout wouldn’t have decided the bout if not for the two previous matches: a 35-second pin by Ernest James at 215 and Malik Rasheed’s 10-8 overtime victory at 103.
James, a defending county runner-up, knew that for Longwood to have any shot, he had to put six points on the board. The senior didn’t waste any time, as he locked up Carlos Hernandez in a cradle for the stick.
“I didn’t think we were out of it,” James said. “I just knew we had to wrestle tough.”
James’ win put Longwood within seven at 26-19, leaving the match in the hands of a pair of eighth-graders. Rasheed is in the midst of a breakout season, but he couldn’t close out David Chaverra despite a five-point lead in the third period. Chaverra forced overtime, when Rasheed earned a takedown to escape with the win.
Hall stood not even 3 feet off the mat throughout Rasheed’s match waiting for his chance. His coaches’ faith in him came to fruition soon thereafter, giving James and the team’s seniors their first win over Brentwood.
“I’m real confident in them,” James said of Rasheed and Hall. “Those guys have been in the room since they were in second grade, so they know what it’s about.”
M. Place’s Buonaiuto pins down 2nd county title
Mascaro, Chris. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 15 Feb 2009
When people see Zach Buonaiuto of Miller Place away from the mat, they have a hard time believing he is a champion wrestler.
“He was a pudgy little kid,” coach Dom LoRe said. “And he’s still not that imposing.”
But when the Miller Place 189-pounder snaps on his headgear and laces up his wrestling shoes, he becomes a one-man wrecking crew.
Yesterday at Hofstra, the senior earned his second straight county title by pinning West Babylon’s Marvin Titus-Casseus in 4:28. For the tournament, he had four pins in 10:39, which was second only to Longwood’s Ernest James, who had four falls in 10:19.
Longwood’s Rasheed brothers, James gain
Sarra, Gregg. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 28 Feb 2009:
ALBANY – Malik Rasheed was a Suffolk County runnerup at 103 pounds. Not bad considering he’s only a ninth grader and one of those excellent up-and-coming stars in the Longwood wrestling program.
Rasheed, a state alternate at 103 pounds, planned on spending this weekend cheering for younger brother Corey (96 pounds) at the New York State wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany. Corey Rasheed, a seventh-grader and county runnerup at 96 pounds, earned a wild-card berth to the state championships.
That plan was changed early Wednesday morning when an upstate wrestler scratched in the 103-pound class and Malik Rasheed was added to the tournament. “It was great news,” he said. “And I wanted to make the most of the chance.”
He has so far. Malik Rasheed earned two decisions, 10-5 and 3-2, and knocked off the sixth and third seeds in the weight class. He’ll meet Huntington’s second-seeded Damon McQueen in Saturday’s semifinal.
“It shows everyone how deep the talent pool is in Suffolk County wrestling,” said Glenn coach T.J. Brocking, who led the Knights to the Suffolk team title. “When you win in Suffolk, you’re a legitimate contender for the state crown.”
Malik and Corey Rasheed were joined in the semifinals by fellow Longwood wrestler Ernst James (215). James pinned both of his opponents, in 5:48 and 35 seconds.
Corey Rasheed will become the second seventh grader in Long Island history to place in the state tournament. He pinned his first opponent in 36 seconds and earned an 8-5 decision in the quarterfinals. The only Long Island seventh grader to place at the state tournament was Shoreham-Wading River’s Jesse Jantzen at 91 pounds in 1995. Jantzen took third in the tournament and went on to win a Long Island record four state titles.
Corey Rasheed will meet sophomore Joe Barbato of Wantagh. Barbato, who won by technical fall and pin, is one of three Wantagh wrestlers in the semis. Nassau totaled six semifinalists. The other Wantagh semifinalists were John Gresheimer, the defending state champion, at 152 pounds, and Matt Loew at 189.
Defending state champion Nick Arajau of Syosset moved into the 125-pound semifinal and Hauppauge’s defending state champ Ken Collado also advanced, into the 112-pound semifinal.
Central Islip’s Andy Rodriguez eliminated top-seeded Giuseppi Lanzi of Amsterdam (II), 6-2, in the 140-pound quarterfinals.

STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Ernest James Wins State Title, Corey Rasheed Places Second, 7 other LIers triumph
Sarra, Gregg. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 01 Mar 2009
ALBANY – This was free running like never before. This was Mike Soria in perpetual motion in the state wrestling championships at Times-Union Center. This was almost too good to be true. An improbable run from an unseeded position to win the Suffolk County 96-pound title and now this … a chance to be the state champ.
“I’m not wasting a second out there,” he said before the final. “I’m getting after it like never before. I’m wrestling for me and my brother.”
The Kings Park junior gained a takedown with 13 seconds left in the first period for a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a 7-0 victory over Longwood’s Corey Rasheed to claim the 96-pound state title last night.
This final was all about family. Max Soria, Mike’s identical twin brother, who placed third in the tournament in the same weight class, sat on a medicine chest in the corner. He sat quietly behind his coaches and tapped his feet on the floor, nervous energy pouring out of him as his brother worked over the seventh-grade Longwood star.
In Rasheed’s corner, his ninth-grade brother Malik, who placed fifth in the state at 103 pounds, tugged at his shirt and watched intently behind the Lions’ coaching staff. The all-Suffolk final was a rematch of the county title bout won by Soria just two weeks ago, 9-5.
For Soria, it was an emotional climb. His brother chose to default when the two were scheduled to meet in Friday’s quarterfinals. That difficult decision weighed heavily on Mike Soria and put even more pressure on him to win it for both of them.
“I couldn’t let him down,” said Mike Soria, who became the first state champion in Kings Park history. “He would have been all over me.”
Rasheed’s second-place finish was the first by a Long Island seventh-grader. But that was little consolation to the competitive Rasheed, who vowed to be back.
“No wants to finish second,” he said.
Certainly not Shoreham-Wading River senior Steven Keith. Keith survived a fantastic bout with Mahopac’s Justis Flamio at 119 pounds. Keith gained a late third-period takedown before Flamio hit a neat reversal, to tie the score at 4 with seven seconds left in regulation. Keith showed his resilience with a well-timed duck under 29 seconds into overtime for the 6-4 win and his second state crown. He earned the 96-pound title in 2007.
Syosset’s mat technician Nick Arujau put on a clinic. The Braves’ junior won his second straight state title with a 4-0 win over senior Jamie Franco of Monroe-Woodbury at 125 pounds. It was the 85th consecutive win for Arujau.
Nothing was going to stop Rocky Point’s Stephen Dutton in his third quest for a state title. The junior came out and flattened defending state champion Andrew Lenzi of Fordham Prep in the first period and never stopped. Dutton’s relentless pounding on the defending state champion resulted in a 10-1 win for the 135-pound title.
“There’s been some disappointment up here the past two years in which he finished second and third and he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way this year,” Rocky Point coach Darren Goldstein said. “He went hard in every period of every match and didn’t look past anyone.”
Longwood’s Ernest James used a near fall for two second period points and a third period reversal to beat previously udefeated Steve Butler of Port Jervis 4-0 for the 215 title.
Notes & quotes: Longtime West Islip coach Tony Mellino was inducted into the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame yesterday. Mellino was honored after a 32-year career in which his teams amassed 311 dual-meet wins.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Macyk, Mark. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 06 Mar 2009
ERNEST JAMES
Longwood
Grade: Senior
Sport: Wrestling
Highlights: James, who had a 44-1 record this season, capped off his high school career by winning the 215-pound state championship with a 4-0 victory over Steven Butler of Port Jervis (Section IX) in the final. James took down defending state champion Paul Glover of Spencerport (V), 5-2, in the semifinals.
Career at Longwood: James finished second in Suffolk at 215 as a junior, but never made it to states before this season.
Future: James, who intends to study sports medicine, definitely wants to wrestle in college but is keeping his options open. He has been in contact with a number of schools, including Maryland, Binghamton and Rider.
On how he defeated the defending state champion: “In the third period I was up 3-2, but he got a quick reversal and I shrugged off his headlock, got two takedowns and won. It felt good, but I wasn’t surprised. I expected to win.”
On being one of three Longwood wrestlers at states: “It was fun. I was hoping to not go up there by myself and that’s what happened. Corey and Malik are funny guys, they are very entertaining.”
On the success of Longwood: “It’s great because when I first started out, we had no one. To now have three guys going up there, I was pretty proud.”
On getting pumped up before a match: “I only listen to my I-Pod to pump me up, nothing really for leisure. I have a lot of rap on there but my favorite is definitely ‘Dead Wrong’ by Notorious B.I.G. It has a nice beat and it really gets me going.”
