BRENTWOOD 36, LONGWOOD 16 Baby, did he rock cradle Able to avoid being victimized by move, Cardoza defeats Goady

Sands, Darren.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 26 Jan 2008:

When asked earlier in the week how he had prepared defending Suffolk League I champion Wilson Cardoza to face Victor Goady of Longwood, Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano quickly summed up his strategy.

“We’re kind of just beating on him,” Napolitano said, laughing, adding that his intent was to mimic Goady’s physical cradling style and ability to pin his opponents. “We’re throwing cradles at Wilson from a different number of positions. If \ doesn’t cradle us, he’s not going to beat us.”

Cardoza made sure of that and then some Friday night. Brentwood beat Longwood, 36-16, in a League I matchup with the help of the well-prepared Cardoza, who won a 9-5 decision against Goady at 125 pounds.

The pair shot glares across the mat before their match began and Cardoza consistently got free of Goady’s attempts to score during it. Goady, believing he could pin Cardoza, chose the top to begin the second period, but Cardoza scored when he broke free in 18 seconds.

“I felt I was more mentally strong,” said Cardoza, a result of working with 140-pound assistant coach Jeremy Salinger, Brentwood’s “cradle specialist.”

“I was just telling myself that I was not going to lose,” Cardoza said. “I felt this week that if I beat him, I’d be on top with the best wrestlers in the county. It feels good.”

Brentwood (14-1) will take on Ward Melville before the League I tournament, but in Friday’s victory, it emerged as a favorite to earn the League I championship for the third year in a row. It would be its fourth League I title in five years.

“We’re having a tremendous season,” Napolitano said. “We have great leadership from our seniors, and even some of our younger kids are stepping up, too.”

In the latest chapter of a tense rivalry at 160 between these teams, Brentwood’s Michael Hernandez won an 8-7 decision over Darren Feliciano.

Hernandez got the better of Feliciano in the pair’s first two meetings last year but Feliciano won their third meeting in the county tournament.
