SUFFOLK LEAGUE I WRESTLING, Reyes caps Brentwood’s win: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

MITCH ABRAMSON. STAFF WRITER.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 01 Feb 2007:

With the outcome of the meet already determined, Brentwood’s Luis Reyes put an exclamation point on the proceedings with a resounding finish to his 145-pound match. Reyes, a league quarterfinalist from a year ago, pinned Longwood‘s Joe Vitucci in 3:25 with a move he described as: “an under hook-out-of-desperation” to cap the Indians’ 37-16 victory yesterday at Brentwood in Suffolk League I.

After carrying out the move, Reyes tore off his headguard and leapt into the arms of his teammates, who celebrated the Indians’ third Suffolk League I dual- meet title in four seasons and second in a row for coach Ralph Napolitano.

“I was trying to use my signature move on him – the double-leg trip,” Reyes, a senior, said. “But I couldn’t do it. He has good defense and was able to get me on my back. I was a little nervous. I didn’t want to lose my final home match, so I bridged up and spun him around and was able to pin him. It feels great to end the season this way.”

Brentwood (12-0, 6-0) defeated Longwood (7-2, 4-1) minus four of its starters. Ricardo Gomez, last year’s county champion at 103 pounds and an All-State wrestler, is recovering from a rolled ankle. His brother, Alex Gomez, who was fifth in the counties last year at 96 pounds, bumped his head in a match and didn’t wrestle. Also missing was 135-pounder Herben Hernandez, who missed the meet for personal reasons. And 171-pounder Josue Mendez, an All-League selection last year, is recuperating from a sore shoulder.

Brentwood’s 125-pound wrestler, Wilson Cardoza, a junior, said he is healthy again after getting stabbed with a screwdriver by a mob of teenagers last year. Cardoza’s right arm was in a cast for about a month before he returned and wrestled for the junior varsity. Yesterday, he beat Longwood‘s Kurt Hilliger, 11-5, to put his team up 27-6 with four matches to go. He still has stab marks on his arm, and a scar on his right side from the attack.

“I’m just happy to be able to wrestle a full season,” he said. “I want to put what happened last year behind me and focus on trying to help this team.”

Jarrell Garcia, Brentwood’s 103-pounder, who was second in the counties last year, pinned Pat Jennings in 4:41 to keep his undefeated streak alive for another season. Garcia, last year’s League I champion at 96 pounds, said he hasn’t lost a dual meet as a junior or a senior.

As Brentwood celebrated, Longwood‘s Steve Karavolos sat on a chair with his neck in a bandage. In the third match of the evening at 171-pounds, he was the victim of an illegal back suplex by Linden Howard, who was leading 4-1. Karavolos, who suffered a neck injury, said he wants another crack at Howard. Longwood was awarded six points for the injury default, tying the competition at 6. Brentwood would go on to win seven straight matches before Longwood‘s Will Fechter pinned Steven Rojas in 3:05 at 135 pounds.
