SUFFOLK LARGE SCHOOLS BOYS TRACK, Smithtown teams up for title: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

JOSEPH STASZEWSKI. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Feb 2007:

Giovanni Signoretti and Brendan Martin had run clear of the field with five laps to go in the 3,200-meter race and the Smithtown teammates made sure neither truly passed the other at the finish line. Their individual placing was inconsequential.

Signoretti placed first in 9 minutes, 45.52 seconds, Martin finished a hundredth of a second later and teammate Brendan Martin was third in a personal-best 9:48.24.

“Twenty-three points is big starting out like this,” Signoretti said after the race. “Most of us are either doubling or tripling just trying to get as many points as possible.”

The strategy worked to perfection as Smithtown won the Suffolk Large School boys indoor track championship at Suffolk CC-Brentwood last night. Smithtown last won the indoor title in 1996-97.

Martin and Signoretti later placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,600. Teammate Dan Frost used a late surge to finish second in the 600 in 1:25.57 and third in the 1,000 in 2:40.50.

“Between first and third is two one-hundredths of a second,” said Frost of the 600 that was won by Brentwood’s Elmo Neckles in 1:25.56. West Islip’s Rod Alzmann finished third in 1:25.60. “They were reviewing it over and over. I thought that I might have had it.”

Smithtown senior Gregory Zielinski won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3 inches, was third in the 55 hurdles in 8.25 seconds and fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 42-3.

“You can’t replace a kid like that,” Smithtown coach Brian Willman said. “He can only compete in three events. I wish I can run him in five.”

Zielinski lost the hurdles to Longwood‘s Austin Archibald, who won with a time of 7.87. Archibald also took home a second-place finish in the long and high jumps. Brentwood’s Michael Rutherford won the high jump with a leap 6-4.

“I finally got the win I needed,” Archibald said of the hurdles. “I got at least one win today. It’s all I could hope for.”

While West Islip shot-putter Dennis Faherty had an off day, his performance was still more than good enough for a win. Faherty won the shot put with a throw of 54-2, but hopes to throw 61 feet this season. Longwood‘s Chris Searles took second with a toss of 48- feet.

“I’m happy that I won, but I’m not happy I didn’t improve since the last meet,” Faherty said. “There is always room for improvement. I was sick this week so I didn’t practice as much.”
