SUFFOLK GIRLS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, Brutus a double winner: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

ADAM RONIS. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 June 2006:

Michelle Brutus was drenched after finishing the 100-meter hurdles.

The Longwood junior’s glasses were fogged up and water was dripping down her frames because of the heavy rainfall yesterday at the Suffolk girls track and field individual championships at Port Jefferson High School.

Even the dreariest conditions couldn’t wipe the smile off Brutus, who won the 100 hurdles in 15.58 seconds, edging her teammate, Kayla Murphy, who finished in 16.07. Brutus began running the 100 hurdles this year and finished second in the team championships last week.

“I’ve never ran in conditions like this,” Brutus said. “It’s tough not to think about it.”

Brutus was just getting started. She also won the 400 hurdles in 63.81, beating Bay Shore’s Briana Thompson, who had a time of 67.4. Brutus also anchored the 4×400 winning relay for Longwood, which had a time of 3:58.99. Bellport placed second in 3:59.95.

Brutus went to the state championships last season for the 400 hurdles, but didn’t fare well. She said last year’s experience should benefit her this time around.

“I was way too tense last season,” Brutus said. “I just need to relax and treat it like any other meet.”

Deer Park senior Kishana Long also knows what it is like to run in the state championships. She went last season for the 200 and will return after winning the 200 in 25.77, finishing ahead of Riverhead’s Angela Smith, who had a time of 25.98. Long also won the 100 in 12.0 and Smith followed with a time of 12.1.

“Going to the states made me practice harder and focus more,” Long said. “There’s a lot of competition up there and it shows you where you’re at.”

Sayville’s Kristy Longman won the 800 in 2:11.57 and Sarah McCurdy of Bay Shore was second in 2:11.52. Both qualify for states. Longman also anchored the 4×800 relay for Sayville. Brittany Llobell, Jackie Kaste, and Sarah Schaefer joined Longman in finishing with a time of 9:24.17. Ward Melville qualified for the states, as well, finishing second in 9:27.14. Natalie Jasmin of Bellport won the 400 in 58.71 and Bay Shore’s Callie Hogan won the 3,000 in 10:07.54.

Because of the wet conditions, some events were postponed. The pole vault and triple jump didn’t take place and will be tomorrow at Port Jefferson.
