After the first day of the Suffolk boys track and field championships, Longwood coach Joe Reilly wasn’t so sure his team would repeat as outdoor champions. Longwood was in seventh place, while Smithtown West, Bay Shore and Ward Melville put forth strong showings.

Fortunately for Longwood, it had a second day. Longwood rebounded with a strong finish yesterday to capture the Division I title at its home track, totaling 104 points to runnerup Smithtown West’s 76.

“It’s a little bit of a surprise to win,” Reilly said. “There were some good teams that ran real well the first day and we had a tough day. We kept finishing second and third and just chipped away. We had some depth. We didn’t have as many studs this year.”

Longwood junior Austin Archibald had no doubt his team could win, even after a poor showing the first day.

“I didn’t think anything of it,” said Archibald, who won the 110- meter hurdles (15.02), took third in the 400 hurdles (57.40) and won the high jump (6-2). “I knew we still had a chance. It didn’t bring us down in spirit at all. It motivated us to have a good second day.”

Longwood senior Anthony Darden wasn’t as optimistic. “I was shocked,” said Darden, who won the shot put (48-11) and placed third in the 100 dash (11.51). “I was concerned. Everybody was mentally strong and pushed hard to win it.”

Longwood trailed Smithtown West, 66-31, entering the pentathlon and Danny Wrobel took second and Osagie Igbeare placed third.

“We really needed a big second day,” Reilly said. “What really turned the corner for us was the pentathlon. Then, we started rolling.”

West Islip won Division II, beating Riverhead, 143-114.50. West Islip’s John Badolato won the 800 (1:58.14), 1,600 (4:28.20), and 3,200 (9:55.71). Also strong for West Islip was Dennis Faherty, who won the shot put (55-10) and discus (141-5). West Islip won the 4 x 800 relay in 8:19.37. Riverhead’s Shamel Lewis won the 100 dash (11.47) and 200 dash (23.13).

Westhampton and Shoreham-Wading River each finished with 79 points to tie for the top spot in Division III. Smithtown East followed with 72. Chris Hays won the 800 (1:58.39) and 1600 (4:29.87) for Shoreham-Wading River, which also won the 4 x 800 relay in 8:28.71. Westhampton’s Jared Nilsson won the 110 hurdles (15.93) and 400 hurdles (57.74). Westhampton won the 4 x 100 relay in 45.28.
