EYE ON THE ISLAND: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

Gold, Jeff.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 02 Feb 2006:

Call it Championship Friday. Two Suffolk League dual-meet wrestling titles are on the line tomorrow night.

In League I, Brentwood (5-0) travels to Longwood (4-1) at 6 p.m. Twelve years removed from the last time he coached Longwood‘s varsity, Mike Piccozi has returned to his old school to put the Lions in position to tie for the dual-meet crown. From 1991-95, Longwood sent 10 wrestlers to the state finals, and eight emerged as champions. If Brentwood wins, it takes the title with an undefeated league season.

An intriguing matchup could be the 145-pound bout between Brentwood’s Leslie Khalfani and Longwood‘s Anthony Scalice.

BRENTWOOD 37, LONGWOOD 18, Team’s the thing for Indians: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

CHRIS ANTONACCI. STAFF WRITER.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 Feb 2006:

Warren Murray could hardly get a few words out before the mob arrived.

Just as Brentwood’s 119-pound wrestler began to describe the bout he rallied to win to clinch a second Suffolk League I dual-meet title in the past three years, almost his entire team gathered in a circle around him.

“Tell him …”

“Don’t forget about …”

“And it was a big win …”

Any encounter with a Brentwood wrestler, even an interview after a match, is an intense experience. That became apparent Friday night as visiting Brentwood won nine of the 13 bouts in a 37-18 victory over Longwood.

“From the first minute of practice, we stress the importance of the team,” Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano said. “Everyone supports each other.”

Even though the match ended with teammate Fernando Irizarry (130) allowing a last-second takedown in a 4-2 loss to Dan Fox, this was truly a victory the Indians (10-2, 6-0) savored.

It became possible after Manny Matos (215) started a five-bout winning streak, pinning Mike Fanning in 4:33 to give the Indians the lead for good at 21-15. Once that occurred, Brentwood’s dominant lightweights did the rest.

Ricardo Gomez (103) followed with a pin over Sam Shepard in 2:13. Shawn Hainey (112) major-decisioned Garrett Schnettler, 13-5, after he landed three near-fall points to complete a five-point move as the second period expired to take a 9-2 lead.

After trailing 6-2, Murray had a five-point move midway through the second period and an early third-period reversal to key a 9-6 decision over Victor Goady.

“I just had to stay focused and do what I had to do to come out on top,” Murray was able to say. “We have been hoping for this since the beginning of the season.”

Irizarry’s brother Martin (125) ended the spurt and made it 37- 15 by squirming free 10 seconds into a 30-second rideout period for a 7-6 double-overtime win over Silvio D’Onfrio.

“They have a great team all-around,” said Longwood coach Mike Picozzi, whose team fell to 7-3, 4-2. “We had a couple of close matches that we needed to win, and it hurt us when we didn’t do that.”

Such as when Brentwood’s Brandon Toro-Segarra (140) landed two near-fall points with 1:06 left to cap a five-point spurt for a 7-2 decision over Chris McAleese in the second bout.

And when Josue Mendez (171) spun around Brett Goldberg for an overtime takedown in a 13-11 decision after allowing three near- fall points as regulation expired.

“It was exciting,” Mendez said. “This whole night was just great.”
