GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD, Bay Shore’s McCurdy runs healthy 1,500, relay: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
CHRIS ANTONACCI. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 31 May 2004:
Mary Liz McCurdy can finally enjoy the good times.
The Bay Shore junior restored confidence in a return from injuries and illness Saturday at the Suffolk girls outdoor track and field championships at Port Jefferson. McCurdy led from the start to win the 1,500-meter race in 4 minutes, 28.54 seconds.
McCurdy had splits of 1:09.4, 1:14.4, 1:12.7 and 1:09.2. She nearly broke the Suffolk mark of 4:28.43 set by Longwood‘s Veronica Haberl in 1983. McCurdy, who will run at the state meet on Friday and Saturday in Syracuse, also ran the final leg of the 4 x 800 relay that set the nation’s fastest time this season in 8:59.84.
“I’m having a blast,” McCurdy said. “It’s really fun now. I feel like I haven’t pushed myself yet.”
McCurdy endured a muscle pull in her right leg in late October and had pancreatitis in March. The experience has given McCurdy a new perspective on her races.
“Not running isn’t the end of the world,” McCurdy said. “It was a confidence issue. I knew I was capable. Now, I am running better than I ever have.”
On the third lap, McCurdy overpowered West Islip’s Allison Kieffer, who placed second in the 1,500 in 4:37.24. McCurdy followed Ryann Hoffman, Laura Cummings and her eighth-grade sister, Sarah, to dominate the relay. They surpassed the mark of 9:03.97 set by Saratoga Springs (Section II) at the Penn Relays on April 24.
“I was not thinking about anyone behind me,” McCurdy said. “If you are worrying about other people and not concentrating on your own race, you are not going to benefit.”
North Babylon’s Chanel Chisholm won the 100 dash in 12.23 before anchoring the first-place 4 x 100 (49.36). Half Hollow Hills’ Tia Harewood took the 100 hurdles in 14.72 and teammate Alana Walker won the 200 in 24.75. Both ran legs on the winning 4 x 400 in 3:56.43.
Bellport’s Erica Young passed Ward Melville’s Michelle Seibert on the final turn of the 400 dash for first in 55.13. Seibert was second in 56.76. Rocky Point’s Michele Lauer (400 IH, 1:03.07), Northport’s Lindsay Sundell (2,000 steeplechase, 7:05.69) and Cummings (3,000, 9:59.86) successfully defended their titles.
Central Islip’s Jessika Shell won the long jump (18-11). Brentwood’s Dayna Johnson was first in the triple jump (38-5 ). Longwood‘s Alex Manning tossed 41-0 in the shot put and Middle Country’s Anne Jefferson threw 115-10 in the discus in winning performances. Comsewogue’s Annie O’Shea amassed 3,129 points for the pentathlon title.
Shoreham-Wading River’s Lauren Biscardi cleared 5-8 to dominate the high jump. Kaitlyn Fitzgerald continued Mount Sinai’s pole vault tradition, surpassing 11-9 for first.
Sachem’s Maria Michta won the non-qualifying 1,500 meter racewalk in 6:40.85.
