COMMACK 4, LONGWOOD 0, Shershenovich in the pink: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

Kelly Shershenovich wears cleats with pink shoelaces, which doesn’t exactly transmit feelings of fear or intimidation. Then again, they’re not supposed to.

“Pink’s my favorite color,” the Commack junior said. “They’re good luck.”

Yesterday, it was hard to argue the point.

Shershenovich assisted two goals and scored another as No. 2 Commack dominated No.15 Longwood, 4-0, in a Suffolk Class AA girls soccer first-round game at Commack. Commack (14-1-2), the League II champion, plays host to No. 7 Sachem East (10-4-3) Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a Class AA quarterfinal.

“Pinky [Shershenovich’s nickname] has been solid on the outside for us all season,” Commack coach Tracie Morenberg said. “She does everything.”

Shershenovich, who also wears pink nailpolish, set up Commack’s first goal, which was all the scoring the Cougars needed. Shershenovich played the ball into the right corner, then sent a low cross into the box where junior Dana Silverstein waited. Silverstein headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead with 12:29 left in the opening half. With 3:45 left, Shershenovich crossed from almost the same spot, this time to junior Eileen Alexander. Alexander, despite colliding with Longwood goalie Paula Sanelli, pushed the ball across the goal line for a 2-0 lead. “I’m the type of player who likes to cross rather than go inside,” Shershenovich said. “I’d rather see my teammates score.”

Shershenovich created her own opportunity to score 30 seconds into the second half, taking the ball from a Longwood defender and left-footing it into the lower right corner of the goal. Amy Drelick added a score with 9:06 left to make it 4-0.

All of which made for a somewhat easy afternoon for junior goalie Brittany Henderson, who made six saves, but spent prolonged stretches of the afternoon simply watching. Most of the day’s action took place at the opposite end of the field as Commack outshot Longwood (8-7-3), 14-6.

“I enjoy days like this,” Henderson said. “I mean, I like making the big saves in big games but I enjoyed this. There’s less pressure.”

Of course, the pressure always intensifies in the playoffs, but the ease with which Commack moved into the quarterfinals suggests the Cougars are poised for a longer postseason run than last year, when they lost to Sachem in a quarterfinal.

“The core of this team has learned soccer the right way, they’re very unselfish,” Morenberg said. “The cohesiveness of the team is unbelievable and it’s evident in our play right now.”
